Axle covers on or off?

I was working on one of my 70’s and since I have the tires off was wondering if you all keep the axle covers on or off? I know they are there for protection, but it kinda looks cool without them.

The axle covers are needed , without them you can’t tighten the assembly up !

Good you found out before you ran it w/o them because then for sure you would know they are necessary.
