Hey everyone so new to the forum. I just scored on a 1983 atc 250r with a 300r hondaline cylinder for $700. This thing rips! I was hauling ass all over ocotillo wells. Bike is in fantastic shape. Needs a brake bleed and that's about it. There is one thing, 2nd gear does not work. The bike will shift into 2nd but then it just seems like it's not really engaging. The chain just kinda rattles and you hear bad metal on metal. All the other gear work great, any ideas? Will post pics tomorrow btw.

I feel like you just answered your own question of what’s wrong. Nothing left to do but open it up and give er’ a peek inside.

Most likely a bent shift fork so that fork and the related gears to that fork will need replaced .

Sorry guys very busy week at work. Here's a pic as promised. I replaced the clutch cable and now it'll go into 2nd and begin to move under its own power then it'll pop out of gear. I really don't want to split the cases so I was praying it was a clutch issue. 250063 250063

Bad shift fork and/or bad gear cogs would be my guess.
