Anyone got any good ideas on how to split a case on a 250R 85 without buying a tool. All bolts are out , cases at about a 1/16 of an inch split but cannot get it to slip over the crankshaft what side should it slip off of ?

Take the counter balancer out or turn it.It may be catching on the case it has to be a certain way .

On the stubborn ones I’ll heat up the case around the main crank bearing with map gas and lightly tap the crank with a brass hammer .
It is will come out easily this way .
Just make sure the shift drum isn’t holding it .

Do I need to put it in neutral I'm not understanding what you mean by shift drum holding it . This is the first time I've ever split a 250R case

The counter shaft side should come off. Did you remove the sprocket.I have always used a rubber mallet. Heat always helps as stated above.

Stator side should be facing up when splitting. Seriously buy the case splitter tool. It pays for itself in one use. The tusk is a quality brand. It will save you a bunch of headaches and time. Link below with free shipping.
