After new battery, just a click sound but no starter going

I'm looking for ideas.

Just installed a new battery (tested and was 12.45w) when I press the starter button only a click sound comes from one of the two devices behind the battery.

Any ideas on what's next?

Yes it is.. I had them filed and cleaned for a perfect connection.
Im thinking what if the starter motor is seized? That's possible i guess
I have to make sure all connections to the starter are as tight and clean as possible...

Is the starter solenoid good? Are you getting power out to the starter when you push the start button?

I do have full 12.4xVolts while pressing the start button with the ignition switch On.

Today I pulled apart the starter and seems good. I mean I checked the continuity of all components as per the service manual and everything tested fine.
I even bypassed the relay and touched the + of the battery pole with the cable that goes straight to the starter.

Anyway, long story short: nothing. That starter should make an attempt to turn but nothing..

Obviously something is not right..


Correct me if I'm wrong but bypassing that relay and hence starter switch should have made it turn, right?

Sounds like you need a new starter motor .

Always start with the make and madel you are working on.. We are all in the blind here ;) The relay,is called a solenoid. Yes, jumping the hot cable coming from the battery, to the cable going to the starter, eliminates all sensors/switches and the starter should spin. If you are working on a 250, sometimes the starter gears are bad from a faulty one way starter bearing,from dirty oil/lack of maintenance. Assuming your shaft spins free in your starter,your problem is most likely brushes. Either way,great quality starters are cheap on Ebay. You can also check with a good test light to see if it is sending current to the starter when the button is pushed. If it is, your problem is the starter/or something binding the starter.

Did you try the straight hook up to the starte while it was out of the motor as well as on the motor

Hi,
This is my new (to me) 1985 - 200M.

Yes, the shaft spins without much resistance (while I had the starter case out). I followed the instructions on the Service Manual (remove the exhaust pipe, etc.)

I tested the starter by touching the connection pole to the battery while it was mounted and secure. I could not take it all out cause it means take the engine side plate off along with the starter. So I left the shaft mounted and just pulled out the shell.

I have to make sure the ground cable is perfectly attached and clean.. I thought about it last night.. maybe poor grounding..

Yes I agree.
I cleaned up as much as I can possible do. But still didn't work. But I didn't clean the grooves in the commuter and that's a problem...

Also I realized there were no washers on the shaft to the back housing.. shouldn't there be washers?

Question for you: How does it work? Does the shaft moves out or how does it engages with the crankshaft ?

They are always engaged and the shaft doesn't move like on an automotive engine. What keeps it from turning is a one way bearing that engages when the starter is turning, but freewheels when the engine is running.
