Hello, i am new to the forum. I been reading them alot over the years but never felt the need to post so never joing the group. Normally not all that i,to computer stuff. But i am in need of desperate help. I own two 1985 350x one was just a roller i have for parts missing the engine and tranny and the other is my toyvi take out all the time. I am currently installi,g a goki electric start on it and now im stuck. So i got the flywheel off installed the goki ring gear and am trying to re install the flywheel buat am having trouble. The service manual reads to use the flywheel holder or strap wrench. I am useing a vicegrip chain wrench and a breaker bar to tighten the center screw but im lifting the whole trike or moving it or the wrench even will slip. Using way more then the torque specs. I even tried the impact but all that doing is shaving the metal off the built in washer. Please help ? Is there a trick to putti,g these back on?
Thanks for any and all help!
Jon

I'm not sure how tight your trying to get that nut or what washer your talking about but an air or electric impact should do the job just fine. A bit of lock tight on the threads would be a good idea. Using a breaker bar sounds like your trying to get it too tight or you have bad threads or the nut is cross threaded.

Also, make sure you have the right Goki kit for that trike. There is 2 different ones for the 350x. One is for the '85 and one is for the '86 as the fly wheels are in a different location from centerline of the engine in the 2 years. They will both bolt up fine, but will destroy themselves quickly if you get them switched. If you are unsure on which one you have you need to check the gear engagement just like you would a truck rear end to make sure your hitting about 3/4 engagement on the ring gear. If you have the wrong kit it will be too much or too little and will either bind up and break the teeth or just skip across the top of them stripping the gear. Goki is no longer in business so there is no replacement parts if you scap the ring gear.

Thanks for the reply. But still doesnt answer anything. My flywheel is not fully seated on to the shaft. Per the service manual it reads to hold the flywheel with a strap wrench and tighten the center bolt to press the flywheel fully on. I am trying to do that but it is still not fully on. Tid say its about seventy percent on. As i try to use the bolt to press it on i know i am useing way more torque then is called to finish it. The bolt itself is a hex bolt with a built flat washer and the bottom side thay touches the flywheel or shaft is eating away when i use the impact wrench.
Thanks

Bob knows the goki and install quite well.

It sounds like either the nut cross threaded as mentioned or the ring gear is not pressed on correctly and hitting something. Can you take the nut off at this point.

The two year model difference and blueing the pattern is gold advice.

How about some pictures?

Im tracking that there is a difference in the goki years. I do not know which i have hopefully it is the correct one but will not know untill i install it and line everything up. But i can not get the flywheel all the way on to the shaft. No the bolt is not cross threaded and no the threads are fine. Yes i can take the bolt out. One pic is of the center bolt you can see the bottom of the head how i said was wearing away as i tried to use the impact wrench. The other pic is of the flywheel with a screwdriver in the gap poing out all the further i can get the flywheel on to the shaft. I know it has to be fully seated but can not get it all the way on. Any suggestions?256203256203

Did that flywheel come off that trike ?. I see a lot of Goki kits that already have the gear pressed on the flywheel, meaning that flywheel may be for the wrong year. The 85 and 86 have a different size taper.

If YOU took that flywheel off and pressed the gear on the only thing I can think of right now would be an issue with the key and the key slot not fitting right, either buggered up or not lining up. The flywheel should just slide on and the bolt only used to keep it there. It's a tapered fit there should be no resistance until it's all the way home.

I'd say to pull the fly wheel again and see what's going on. Like pointed out above, it should go on by hand, and the bolt is just there to set it tight on the taper which barely moves anything. It's not a press on type of flywheel.

I think it's important for us to know if this flywheel was on this engine and was working correctly before attempting the Goki install.

Looked at the photos, and it looks like it's close to being on fully, so maybe it's the 85 vs 86 difference. I've read as a set the flywheel and stator can be swapped as a whole unit, never saw any mention the tapers were different till now.

Might be worth while test fitting the side cover on and looking where the starter hole is to see how close it looks to lining up. If it's close, testing the gear mesh pattern might be the best action. If it's not right, then there's something going on with the taper/key area.

Good luck with the project, and like others said, there's no replacement parts being made for these kits. I've poke around the blue/yellow wire harness and reproduced it before and helped find an "upgrade" Honda starter relay and replaced the handle bar starter button to a full Honda handle bar switch set with starter (lights, kill, and starter). If you need help with the electrical side, let me know and I'll try my best to help out.

There are 2 different flywheels for the 86 model . If you have an early 86 model it's the same as an 85. If you have a later model the flywheels are different. I believe most of the 86 models have the updated one.

I got this information from my numerous phone conversations with the Goki ATC specialist at Goki. If you look up the part numbers for flywheels the 86 has 2 of them listed.

Yea, 85 vs 86 100% are different, the stator has the be paired up right to work correctly. I thought that was the only difference, not the mounting taper as well though? Maybe you're talking about the spot the ring gear presses on?

Thanks for all the input guys. But this is the one that came off of the machine, by me. And i double checked the key and key slot nothing is interfering.

Is it possible your flywheel is contacting something on the inside or along the inside edge? If you get that bolt snug, to the point you say it's putting up too much resistance, can you still turn the flywheel back and forth or is binding on something?

I'm thinking it might be fully seating, but the details of it is lacking in the manual probably. Just an FYI, the crank shaft doesn't end up flush with the bolt surface, there's going to be threads exposed on the flywheel for the puller. I haven't been around enough flywheels to identify if the photos are of the fly wheel all the way on or not.

Like I said in the post before, does the side cover interfere at all? Ring gear location look about right though the starter hole? It very well could be on all the way already. It's hard to judge though photos for us, so kind of has to be checked in person. Sadly I don't have a 350x engine laying around to see the depth for the shaft vs flywheel surface or I'd snap a photo of what it should look like.
