I sold my 85 250sx and 86 225dr a couple years ago. I got the itch again and picked up this 84 atc70. I’m hoping to tear it down this winter. Just got to decide on a color combo I like. I may go with a lifan 125 but I haven’t committed yet. The clutch is on its last leg so I might just put a heavy duty clutch in it and send until it blows.

Any ideas or pics of cool builds would be appreciated.

Not mine and I don't have many pictures, but here is one that a friend of mine used to have. He had a Lifan 125 in it and Trail 70 (I think) forks on it. It really surprised me where he could ride it. He also said that he liked to ride it because he looked like a circus bear on it.260442260443

Do ATC70's ever blow up? That basic engine design seems to be a really good design, haven't seen one ever with major engine problems with the exception of the common shifter problems with the ATC125M. I'd say replace the clutch, throw some fresh rings in it and ride the snot out of it =).

That’s a good point lol. Ultimately this will be my daughters in a few years so probably best to keep it a 70. When that time comes hopefully I’ll have another one to put a 125 in.

Another thing to remember, even though the china engines are similar design, their fit, finish, porting, carbs, etc are built to a low price point which ultimately means a 125cc Honda will 9 times out of 10 (or more) have noticeably more power than the china 125. Like I rode a 125cc china quad recently, it felt like it had a 50cc engine or something, no power, max speed like 25mph, 100% no chance it could ever do a wheelie, but it's design is a bit weird too, one forward gear, one reverse and it wasn't cvt (aka belt). My sister's old atc70 had more power and went faster with it's 4 speed trans, and the throttle has an adjuster to limit how much throttle you can give it, so won't be a problem for your daughters. *IF* the atc70 engine ever goes bad where repair is way too much, you could always buy a used engine off feebay, or try to source another atc70 for a reasonable price that isn't super pretty just for the engine. The engines are stupid easy to remove, like unplug the electrical, remove the chain, unbolt 4 bolts and it drops right out.
