Hello everyone!

I have a 1985 (I think) 250ES Big Red that has been in the family since pretty much new. It's been stored outside a number of years, so last year I took it back to my place and give it a major birthday.

Previously it has only run with half choke, as the carb was in major need of cleaning. I cleaned it in the ultrasonic etc, and when back together it ran perfectly. Had it idling for ages, set the mixture. All perfect. Dropped it back to my parents place, reversing off the trailer it went really rich, like the float was stuck. Since then I have had the carb on and off, and cleaned more times than I care to remember! Last time I even added a blob of JB weld on the float, to adjust the height. Still the same. Start it up. Get a minute of perfect running. Then it will barely run and throws masses of fuel in.

Any ideas? I'm getting desparate!

Thanks in advance.

Is it leaking out the overflow when this happens ?

In your few cleanings make sure you didn’t loose the needle seat which is part number 2 just above part number 19 .
I cant tell you how many carburetors I’ve taken apart and this was either missing or installed up side down . It will fall out unnoticeably while cleaning .

Wow can't believe it, I have tried and tried to get the actual seat out of sooo many carbs and could never get it out (I work on outboards mostly)

I believe that is the 86 model, personally I would buy a carb kit and download the manual and setup the carb 100% to spec from the manual, from there onwards you can troubleshoot should the problem persist, but you will most likely find it is a small simple thing like the needle tip that is damaged or one of the jets still being dirty.
