Wheels Through Time

The wife and I trekked out to Maggie Valley North Carolina to finally visit a place that I've been trying to visit for almost 14 years now.

This museum is called Wheels Through Time and it was created by Dale Walksler who I believe, started collecting antique American motorcycles since about 1992. He already owned a motorcycle dealership in Illinois when he began collecting and displaying antique motorcycles.

Review: I'd been a fan of Dales YouTube channel for quite some time and has a good friend who visited the place in 2007 and convinced me that it was like the Barber Museum of American only antique motorcycles. I was familiar with his collection of one of a kind American iron for some time now but had always wanted to see the place in person someday. Last Thursday I got that chance. This place has about 350 of the rarest examples of antique American motorcycles ever assembled in one building and every complete motorcycle in the building starts and runs. There are a number of curators on-hand, including the owner Matt Walksler, who tell the history of each machine in detail. Matt's father Dale passed away of cancer about a year and a half ago and his son Matt carried the torch and is responsible keeping his dad's legacy since today. Dale appears to have taught Matt everything he knew, which is a literal PhD worth of knowledge of the history and mechanical workings of these machines.

Impressions: Holy Cow. We spent at least six hours there. I was already overwhelmed in the first room of the museum. They have all American early iron, flat track racers, board track racers, hillclimbers, street bikes, drag bikes from 1903 up until the early sixties with a handful of later model shovels and evos. Not just Harley and Indian either. There are plenty of other American machines represented.

Every bike on display runs. They go around and randomly pick machines from exhibits and put a little gas in them and fire them up. In six hours we were there, they fired up 12 different antique bikes and Matt took a spin around the inside and outside the museum on at least one of them. The condition of the machines ranges from almost totally rusty to 'original paint' to 'fully concourse restored' and everything in between. The pics I'm getting ready to share don't do it justice at all. It's just something you should really go see in person and it's well worth the $15 admission to see the rarest antique American motorcycles on the planet Earth.

This is this year's raffle bike, a 1937 knucklehead meticulously restored with many NOS (YES, NOS) parts. These annual raffles help keep the place going so Matt can buy more machines to exhibit. I can tell you that these pics don't do this bike justice now that I've seen it in person.

The 1916 Traub Motorcycle

This is the rarest American motorcycle in the world. It was found bricked up inside a wall under a staircase. Was once owned by Bud Ekin and had tires to a Steve McQueen. Bud Ekin was a famous champion American Triumph racer, stuntman in The Great Escape and Bullitt (drove McQueen's mustang in stunt scenes)

This bike was all homemade and hand built with only the rims, tires, carb, and magneto as the only purchase components. Every other part of the motorcycle including the engine was homemade one-off by a certain Mr Traub around 1916. Not much of known about the builder or what it was eventually bricked up in a wall sometime around WW1. This thing runs and drives. Overwhelming just looking at the pics....can't imagine being there in person. I can't truly appreciate what I'm seeing as I'm out of my league with motorcycles in general but I can recognize treasure when I see it. Military pigeon carrier.....wow. Thanks for sharing Doug!

The best thing is most of the bikes show a history of riding. They're not a sterile bunch of spit-shined bikes that deep pockets focused their love of the material on. Many of them look like the side hobby of hard working people who prized function over form.

Dale Walksler, the founder, owned a motorcycle dealership and collected rare bikes. So that's precisely how this all started. He eventually gave up the dealership to keep the collection going and started a museum and then moving it from Illinois to Maggie Valley NC. He passed away from cancer roughly 18 months ago, I believe, and his son Matt who is just as passionate, took over at the helm.

My pics only do the place 60% justice.

EVERY complete bike in this museum, all 350+, RUNS and moves. They are very particular about this fact. He called it "The Museum that runs"..... These are not just display pieces. They go around each day randomly picking bikes to fire up for museum patrons and they started at least 10 bikes the day I was there. That's why everything has a catch pan under each machine. They leak oil and gas. Matt, Andy, or Jake carried around a small can of gas and they put just enough in the tank and fire that mother right up inside the building. Smoke and fumes be damned. Matt rides one around the museum weaving in and out of the crowd of people just for kicks. His dad used to do the same thing when he was alive.

Each of them is very knowledgeable about every machine and are present to answer questions, tell stories, and generally entertain you with the history of these machines. All the employees were so completely awesome, kind, and helpful. I think Matt's mom was the one who directed me where to find the Crocker because they were about to close and I had somehow missed seeing it. I still kept walking past it until I heard her voice asking me if I found it yet. She had come from behind the office and gift shop counter into the museum to make sure I didn't miss it. The personal service was impressive. I'll be back next spring to see it again.

If you love old motorcycles and have $15 to spare (discount for veterans and current military,etc) I guarantee that you will not be disappointed. This is the single greatest thing I have ever attended like this. I've never been to Barber Museum but my friends who have said they like WTT more than Barber.

Stumbled across this a few days ago. I live for this kind of stuff!!

I envision an old greybeard in greasy, grimy coveralls out in the boneyard scavaging parts off of various machines to put something like this together.

ETA: I read on another site that one of it's TWO transmissions is from a Ford Model A, the other being the original Harley transmission.

Gotta visit that one. I'm not a motorcycle guy to know the difference between "rare" and "just old" but definitely enjoy learning the history on many of them.
Visited the Barber museum once and was amazed by that. Comparing the two......Wheels Through Time looks more blue collar which wold fit my style more.

What a beautiful job. You would have loved Fast Eddies collection here in Shunk. We lost him this summer so his collection has been disassembled. It was free, as well as mine. I know first hand the amount of blood, sweat, tears, time, cash and dedication it takes to try and preserve these things for the people to see in the future . $15 is way too low for a place like that....
