Zanesville teen killed in head-on collision

TR Staff Reports

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ZANESVILLE -- An 18-year-old Zanesville girl was killed in a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon.

The girl, Katie Jenkins, was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital hospital, said Ohio Highway Patrol Zanesville post Trooper Matt Boyd.

Jenkins was driving her 1994 Geo Metro north on Pinkerton Road between New Coopermill Road and Old Coopermill Road in Zanesville just before 4 p.m. Tuesday,. A 1987 Ford Van driven by Raymond Dodson, 61, of Zanesville, was driving south on Pinkerton Road.

Jenkins crested a hill on that road and was driving left of center, hitting Dodson's vehicle head-on, Boyd said. Dodson was not injured.

Both Dodson and Jenkins, who was a resident of Pinkerton Road, were wearing seat belts. Alcohol is not considered to be a factor, Boyd said.

No citations were issued.

Katie is the second friend I have lost do to wrecks. neither had anything to do with speed, drugs, or aclohol. Ryan Church.. the star quarter back was killed, do to massive head trama,in october of 01 he wasnt wearing a seat belt and was ejected when the driver.. also a friend fo mine, fell asleep at the wheel and rolled the truck. Katie on the other hand had her seat belt on, not sure the actual cuase of death but I think internal injuries more in likiley

Callin hours are tommorrow funeral is saturday.. so ill be gone both those days. We were told today at school, that katie and ryan (who we lost in 01) will be prom king and queen. She was a very pretty girl, and it is such a shame to have lost her, she brought a smile onto everyones face. She would could make the least little thing into a realyl big story, which got her the nick name of the "drama queen"... One of her teachers miss stotts.. once said to her "When you graduate as you walk across the stage I'm going to play Mary J. Blidge's "No More Drama" and Katie replied "Oh Miss Stotts I'll always have drama."..... Tuesday we very sadly lost that drama...

She was due to leave for newyork with the choir at 4:30 yesterday morning.... She had always wanted to perform in New York.... that trip never came... Katie was and will always be a performer.

I hope shes up there in heaven tossin some footballs with our starting quarterback Ryan Church we lost in 01.

Heavens QB, and Gods drama queen...together again

If she was in a large truck instead of those tin-can Geo's...she probably would've lived...

Very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Best of wishes to you and their family.

Man thats sad...Makes you realise how anyone can go at any time. Fourtanetly I haven't had any friends die in car wrecks, but I have had some family. This happened when I was real young, around 5 or so. My cousin and his fiance were going somewheres and they had a wreck. She died instantly and he was in the hospital for over a year. He was paralyzed and suffered extensive brain damage. He was going to have his own home with his wife and raise a family and now he is dependant of his parents because of his disabilities. Sad story.

4x4chevette, I'm sorry to hear about your friend. It's got to be a tough loss. :(

Everyone else, Listen to yourselves! You're blaming the car for her death. If she had been on a 3 wheeler or quad would you still say "I can't beleive they're still making those damn things." The idiots of the past are to blame for the Consent Decree which eliminated 3 wheelers. But you probably don't remember it because you were either in diapers or were just a gleam in your parent's eyes. If everyone continues to blame the "vehicle" all anyone will be able to do is remember how it used to be.

Just got home from the showin.... It was really bad, but everyone seems to be doin ok, we all luaghed about the pictures they had up, and rememberign those specail times

Thanks for the kind words.

I agree... its not the car to blame, the car isnt what went wrong.. she was lef tto center, got hit by a fullsize van, car was crunched, seatbelt cut her up...Katie always drove realyl close to the steering wheel, only a few inches from it. In my opinion thats what happened... No matter what car she was on..

Best wishes to her family and friends.

The car is somehwhat to blame. It is little period. No protection. Unlike BIG trucks,Vans, SUV's etc. Lets be realistic.

Sandman, sounds like you own a damn Geo. Everyone has a right to say what they want too.

I agree. It partly is the car to blame. I know it is not the only reason she died though. If she were to have been driving an F-350...I'm pretty sure she woulda lived. Ahh well....there is nothing we can do about it now. Best of wishes

Sorry guys. I don't own a Geo. But yes everyone is entitled to their opinion and I have mine. But the car is NOT to blame unless there is a proven mechanical malfunction that caused it to go across the centerline. It didn't force anyone to drive it. It didn't force anyone to buy it. Maybe her cirumstances of needing a car had something to do with owning and driving it, but you cannot blame the car. It's just like blaming a gun for shooting someone, and it's exactly like the wackos of the past saying three wheelers are unsafe and causing people to get hurt and die. Can you say operator error? Hell, walking across the street is unsafe. If you get hit by a car are you going to blame it on the pavement? Get real guys and read the writing on the wall.

Consumer Product Saftey Commission

These guys are the ones who decides FOR US, wheather a certian product is safe for US to use! I dont know about you guys...but I am certainly aware of what I can or can not do on my own. For example: Imagine someone always by your side, telling you what you can or cant wear, what you can or cant drive, what you can or cant eat, what you can or cant drink, etc...etc...

In short...its the damn government officials who we want to burn in effegy.

P.S. Why do you ask?

P.P.S I agree with what you said about the car not being the only thing to blame. I realize that it was her fault for driving onto the wrong side of the road and not the car's. But, if she had driven onto the wrong side of the road in...say...an F-350; She probably would still be with us today, as I stated earlier.

Vans and trucks cannot be compared to todays cars. They are fullframed vehicles built to stay stiff in accidents. Cars are unibodied, built to cumble, but keep the passanger comparment safe. The small car isnt what killed her.
We wasnt pinned in the car or anything. Like I said earlier, its becuase of the way she positioned herself while driving.

Its a shame we lost her, but to blame the car for her death.. is out of line

I sometimes wonder if I had gotten in a wreck like this what would have happened. I owned a mazda glc and was almost hit by some -in a hurry to get somewhere- cheer leaders that were riding in a escort hatchback at 60 mph or so. Nevermind the three loaded dump trucks they were passing on a blind curve going downhill. I figger there was less than a foot clearance between the dump trucks, the escort and my left side mirror. It all happened so fast. It is sad to lose a friend but one cannot tell what lies around the next corner until you get there. If this person had been delayed just 5 minutes by a cop looking for speeders, would things be different? No one will ever know.

4x4chevette, I too am sorry to hear about the loss of your good friend. I can't quite relate to what you must be feeling because I've never lost a friend, at such a young age, to a tragic accident. And that's what it sounds like it was, an "accident." An accident, not a faulty, defective automobile. I'm going to have to side with Mr. Sandman on this one. Most people know that head-on collisions frequently end in tragic deaths, and that it's safer to be in a huge, surrounded by tons of steel, vehicle, but does that make the Geo unsafe or defective? Maybe unsafe, considering this particular accident, but not defective. The Geo meets a required level of governmental safety standards. Had the Geo been pitted against a similar, or mid-sized vehicle, it would have faired better, and perhaps no one would've died. So, is it the Geo's fault for being too small, or the van's fault for being too big?

Maybe our government should enact a law that would prescribe a single, uniform-sized vehicle for all of America's roads. And, to keep as many people as possible happy, it should be a mid-sized vehicle. That way, they're only pissing off a few small car owners, and a few large vehicle owners also. Now, answer this question. When our full-size, 4x4 Rams, Silverados, Hummers, & F-350's get banned from the road, how the hell are we going to get our RV trailers, toy haulers, trikes, & ATV trailers out to our favorite ride spots? Think this will never happen? I hope it doesn't, but beliveve me, there are people out there right now pushing for such laws to be passed.

I love this country and the freedoms it gives me. One of those freedoms just happens to be driving a small, medium, or large vehicle, whatever I choose. If I can afford it, I can own it. If I wan't to risk injury in my small car, or on my threewheeler , then so be it. I am responsible for my own actions. I agree with Wickedfinger that this post has gotten way off topic, but comments about the car being at fault, are the same types of comments that started all of the lawsuits against threewheelers, which eventually led to their demise. Think about it.
