Here you go. I got this from a Yamaha ATV site. Looks like your brother has a 2000 model quad.

"The year code in the Vehicle Identification Number is the 10th position. The key for this 10th digit is given in the chart below. Note that starting with model year 2001 vehicles, the 10th position “year code” will be a number instead of a letter. The year code can be the calendar year in which a vehicle is built, or a model or type year allocated by the manufacturer."

Congratulations! I looked all over the place and searched for a couple of hours and couldnt find it, and called Yamaha out of frustration! I had to reread your post, though. At first I thought you said you had found it on THE Yamaha site, but I see youve found it on A Yamaha site. The official Yamaha site doesnt tell you anything other than to call them, and youd think it would be to their benefit to post it.

No problem. Glad to help out. That's a great price for a late model quad. Shows there are deals out there to be had. Just have to be in the right place at the right time.

Yes, there are deals out there. We just bought a 2002 400ex for real cheap under $500. More on this purchase at a later date. ;)
