Sending messages iver internet

does anyone know how to send a message over the internet using the net send command or something similar. I can do it over a LAN but I want to mess around with my friends. I tryed their IP and that didnt work. Any clues??

They have to have it turned on, and by default it usually comes turned off.

Also, they have to be running windows 2000/XP. It will not work on the 9x platform. It might work on NT but I don't know.

Yea its a great way to get pop ups. The first thing i do when i install 2k or xp is disable it so i dont get no messenger service pop ups. thats the service that must be running. we mess around with that stuff in school if we wanna talk when were not supose to.

how do you do that bumb? Come to think of it I havent recieved any pop ups of that kind lately.
