Looks like my ride today will be delayed, heres what just happened when I tried to start my 200s. I guess the guy was telling the truth about the rebuilt pull starter, sucks they didn't know how to do it right either!
I'm sure I can get at least one of these fixed today.. :)
I have been dying to open it up anyway, but my experience with the first one got to me..
Well off with the C clip, see ya.

I can't really tell you what was wrong except the recoil spring wasn't tight enough and I don't think they had the other stuff in there right.
It wasn't to hard to fix the spring tension, I just removed the handle and pulled the rope out from the pully thing, wound the srping tight and stuck the rope back through. I let it suck it up and it seemed good so I tied it off.
There are no pics of the springs and weights because that part was harder..
I stuck it all in there best I could, I tried so many combinations I don't even know what worked..in the end it seemed the force was with me because now it works and I only have one leftover washer.

I got to get a book for this thing, I think the next one will go easier. I have an idea for a spring winding tool..

Happy trails!!

God made a real good spring winding tool. It's called your hands. I'm sorry but to me a pull starter is soooo easy to fix. From a bare case to a working pullstarter takes at most 30 minutes only using your bare hands.

Never thought I would say it, but Howdy is right. I just put my second pull starter together in about 10 minutes with the big spring.
I cut a slit in some 3/4" pipe and welded it to a piece of channel to wind the spring up. Made it too tight...lol
Stuck a piece of tape on it and was off to the races. Drop it in the case and pull off the tape. From there it isn't nothing. You don't seem to need the little W shaped springs, used all the good ones on the first one I did and this one works great without them.

You are so right.

You won't catch me trying to wind one by hand unless I am drunk though.

I have posted the directions to put the main spring in before. I did a quick search and came up with the link.

for our final in small engines class we had to rebuild a b&s pull starter in under 5 min...not that hard, take out the rope, take out the spring straighten it and clean it and then put it back in and rewind it and put the rope back in

Awesome pics! Wish I would have seen this the day I started the thread. :)
I still like winding it up and pushing the rope through from the inside.

I guess it's my big fingers..

a C-clamp is very handy when working on a recoil to hold tension on the spring while you thread the rope. Some are much handier to repair than others
