Year?? They changed drastically over years. The pre 2000's were little All time 4wd 5 Speed Autolcluths (Today's Big Bear 400 but not as refined). The 2000 to 2001 were the veyr best Kodiaks. They were Fully automatic, front and rear shaft, 2 valve 4 strokes with selectable 4wd (still yamaha 3wd but hey). Top Speed is 53mph. and they HAUL ASS! They are one of the top 5 ute Quads ever Id say. In 2002, Yamaha came out with the 450 (which is amazing) @ the same price of 2001's Kodiak 400 so the 400 got raped of its rear disk and low range. Look @ the Grizzly 660, Yamaha took the perfect chassis of the Kodiak and the pwoerhouse 5 valave big bore engine of a raptor, added some digital features, made it a tad bit larger, changed the drivetrain/ transmission on the engine, as well as the suspension and came out with a real winner!

Being a 2003 I havnt ridden one yet but I know for a fact they wouldnt have a problem doing 55-60mph with the 421cc Engine.

I HAVE A 2001 AND PUT A SUPERTRAPP PIPE AND A JET KIT ON IT. IT FLIES!!! I WOULD RECOMMEND PUTTING STIFFER TIRES ON IT. STOCKERS PUSH AND ROLL A LITTLE IN THE CORNERS. BEARCLAWS WORK GREAT. GREAT MACHINE. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! IT'S PLENTY FAST FOR A 4X4 BUT I'D MUCH RATHER HAVE MORE OF A MID-RANGE PUNCH THAN A HIGH TOP END SPEED WITH THIS MACHINE. IF TOP SPEED IS WHAT U ARE LOOKING FOR I'D GO WITH SOMETHING ELSE. GOOD LUCK!

i have a kodiak 450. just got it, however i only have about a 10th of a mile strait away to ride on around here. in that area ive got it up to 41mph but theres still quite a bit there (posibley another gear?) when i get it over to my friends place ill let ya know on true top speed. i like it though, good suspension, stearing\handeling, i also have stock tires and 27" blackwaters, i have noticed that with either set of tires i fell the center of gravity is a little high but hey its a utility quad, not a racer. also it has a differential lock which is nice, (it locks all 4 wheels for true 4wd)

My dad used to have a Kodiak 400. 00 or 01 model. I really enjoyed trail riding it and wish he still had it. now I look back and wish I would have tried to buy it, but oh well. I think they are great utility quads and would definitely consider a new one if I was in the market for a utility quad.
