use finer grits of sand paper then polish or machine buff it on a bench grinder with some wheels and compound

use some really really fine sandpaper (1,000 grit or so) and then a buffing wheel is the only real way I know of.

I used to work at Themeworks in Highsprings,Fl. and we used to make exibits and cool stuff for Themeparks and Museums and stuff. Anyway, one day they had me take a piece of rusty carbon steel plate about 3' x 3' and sand it with the orbital sander. I started with 40 grit, then 80, then 120, then 180, on and on until I was using 2500 grit! But I'll tell you now, that rusty piece of steel looked like a mirror when I got done. We clearcoated it and put it in some kind of learning playground for kids at the EdVenture museum in Columbia, S.C. The reason we used steel is so the kids could'nt break it like they would glass. I'll bet you could do the same with your Alum/Mag part.

depending on how rough it is, i work down from more grit emery cloth up to more fine, using autosol (sp?) it shines up pretty good
