View Full Version : What's so special about riding dunes?

Even though I never rode them what's the big deal? Some hills the rest is flat and boring. I would think the type of riding up in these parts is better. Trails (lots of them) all kinds of obstacles and diffrent types of terrian And lots of hills. Any thoughts?

When I see pics of some places it seems like there are always a ton of people. Is that because there is no where else to ride or it is just that popular. I bet the sand softens impact when wrecking. lol

I'm not trying to bash it or anything but I just don't understand.

Up here we have some silt pits. I guess thats from the coal companies washing coal years ago. And they seem to be the more popular riding areas.

most people that trail ride out our way want to ride the dunes, just like the people out west would like to ride the gncc's out here

You are right shee. I would also like to try it someday. But I like the chalenge of trail riding. dune riding does not seem that challenging to me exept for a huge dune or two. Maybe I'd have a change of heart if I got to try it. I guess climbimg a silt bank is the same as a sand dune.

When I goto little sahara or beaver dunes I spend most of my time on the trails. The dune parks have many many trails also. I think it just seems you always see pictures of the open dunes, because that is where people usually do all the jumping at. My self I agree the open dunes get boring very fast, but this is the terain I have to ride in so I enjoy every minute of it.

chris200x

See, I didn't even know there were "trails" it just seemed to me like a huge wide open space...kinda dull don't you think?

If anyone has some pics post them (sand trails) I cannot grasp this concept. Is it just tire tracks in the sand that you follow?

We are going to Beaver Dunes tomarrow I'll post some pictures when I get home. You'll be amazed, this time of year there will be hills that 4x4 500 scramblers with paddles won't be able to climb ( we have spent hours getting bigger and bigger runs trying to climb them), by the end of the summer the hills will get worn down.

It is massive areas of overran brush that people have cut trails through.

chris200x

i'll be anxious to see them. Brush??? See, I've got desert pictured in my head. maybe the occasional tumbleweed. lol

I'm going for the first time in the morning so I'll let you know. I'm hoping I'll be able use my R's speed and power out there. The desert trails around here force me to ride slower than I'd like. I grew up riding trails in Ohio and have done just about every type of riding except dunes so it should be fun.

The beauty of riding the wide open dunes is that you make your own trails. You don't let a trail dictate where you go. If you ride the same trails over & over, eventually they will get boring & less challenging as you become familiar with them. On the dunes, you can zig-zag every which way you want to and make trails with infinite possibilities. Plus, the sand is soft & offers a smooth ride, when recently wind blown, & there are no rocks to ding your wheels on. It may not seem challenging, but believe me it is.

The cost is 10.50 permit. 10 to park your truck one time fee. And 15 for a flag. Then add gas.

Dunes, what is so great. Well technical is there, you avoid steep dropoffs ie razorbacks. Some crazy folks do this at high speed. The hills are not little. My daughter will not go down some, heck I have a hard time as well. Try getting out of soft sand. The only thing that barely makes that is a nicely built machine. These are called 2 stroke holes, I believe. You can line up and go full out to see whom is the fastest, on flat, or hill. Your machine stays clean. Yes the sand is very forgiving. The roosts or rooster tails are extremely large. There are trails, they just have sand in em.

hey, glamis is a little different, more open, a little choppier, looser sand. you really need paddles to appreciate it, get up the hills a lot easier. when you're in an ocean, you need a boat with paddles.

riding the dunes is like being on GODs rollercoaster...which is far better than any thing man made..

theirs nothing like shooting up a big dune towards what looks like the edge of the world only to turn and ride along the razor when you reach the top.. fast forward momentum speed must be maintained...reactions must be made quickly and decisively...then and only then can you determine whats on the other side and make your choice what direction to ride next...sometimes when you reach the razor you realize its a straght drop to the bottom on the otherside......you never know til your on the edge..whew.....total undescribable adrenaline rush....

as far as the ride...sand is smoooooooth....nothing bone jarring about it unless of course its damp, then it beats you to death....like trail riding

as far as a comparison between hardpack dirt and sand..you cant compare them... two totally different worlds...each with different skills needed

and something can be said about sand...different densities and moisture make the difference between junk and the real McCoy......

there is nothing that tops riding on pure perfect sand...smoooth, fast, and adrenaline dumping scary hanging off into space razorbacks...

when a fresh wind blows and the drifts become soft, it's very easy to go over the front on a trike...I've done it a few times and had the 350x come right on top of me only to bounce up with minor or no injuries...yes my fellow triker, sand also has the potential of being kind in accidents...

The only problem I have with riding in sand is that it gets into everything, bearings, chain, engine. It isnt worth it to me to have to tear my bike apart after a ride. I'll stick to riding Great North Wet style trails.

If you think sand does more damage than mud, you're nuts. For the most part sand just falls off of whatever it hits. Mud clings and because it's wet it penetrates far more than sand could.

Until you've been at the base of a 500 foot tall sand dune looking straight up at a 45 degree angle and you drop the clutch and pin it, WOT, throwing sand everywhere and your bike is using every drop of horsepower it has to get up to speed to make it to the top and then you turn around and head back down WOT, you won't understand.

Mymint87 pretty much summed it up with his roller coaster comparison, but I'll add to it. If you snow ski, it's like fresh powder. If you water ski, it's like when the lake is glass. If you ride sand dunes, there's nothing like smooth and trackless virgin sand.

One more anomaly that I can only find out in the SAND...
Where else can ya go up a 300ft + hill, then down the next & so on (rollercoasterish like MyMint said) "WOT in 4th gear" for AS LONG AS YOU CAN HOLD ON!!! :naughty:
Its A SAND THING! :beer

My arms feel like they're gonna fall off right now. It's a blast but it definitely works you out.

Flying up a dune WOT in 4th is unreal. Especially when there's a bunch of fairly deep whoops at the bottom that you have to tackle without losing speed. It's intense. Next time I'll take the camera back where we were racing up the hill. The one I have pics and vids of is a small one. I wish I had a helmet cam though. Just surfing the various dunes going from one valley to another with all the extreme height changes... It's just unlike anything I've ever seen.

I ride almost no mud and one of my riding buddies had to replace the wheel bearings in his CR after riding Sand Lake, He'd ridden about for about a year before that without a problem and has ridden for nearly as long after and hasnt had to touch it. My bearings are older than his and ive ridden more than he has and my bearings are as good as when the bike was new. My advice is to get a beater bike that you dont have to worry about to ride sand with. Mud doesnt work into stuff the way sand does unless your muddin non stop.

I'm basing what I say on my experience, I rode a harescramble in basicly non stop gooey disgusting mud and when I pulled my back end apart there was nothing in the bearings. I'm sure that if you dont wash your bikes and let stuff go that it may be diffrent but I dont know.

Granted I don't know anything about Sand Lake (it sounds wet), but I've ridden my 250R in sand for the majority of the 20+ years I've owned it and have never had to replace a bearing because of sand getting into it. I have replaced my swing arm bearings due to them freezing up with rust that was caused by mud and water from riding in the wet, muddy stuff when I didn't really care about keeping my bike clean and pristine.

As for getting a beater bike to ride in the sand, they're hard to come by out west here unless they're imported from the east.

Not to sound stupid but what do you mean by riding season? Aren't those dunes open year round? Too hot or something during summer?

It's around 90 @ those dunes right now, with the possiblity of going over 100 any day. Once it does that, it will stay around 100 for a few months. So yep'r its like "pure HELL", great place to ride but too uncomfortable for me. You could go for night rides if ya had a good air conditioned trailer to sleep in all day. ;)

I went once last season around now & it was 95 out, my 85R didn't like it. Puked up half a tank of coolent on a 1/2 hour ride, lacking real top end power the whole time too. The surface temps on the sand must get well over 120, ya can't even keep bare skin on it for more than a few seconds.

It's wide open for buisness though, feel free to go "melt your cares away". :beer

Well i'm in a perfect spot of cali, 2 hours from pismo (nice and cool in the summer) 4 hours from Dumont (way too hot in the summer) 5or 6 from Glamis, (never traveled down there) an hour from the mountains (gota get some trairiding in) and 2 hours from the Desert. Where i live there is no off season, we ride year around.

All the other dunes north of the Imperial Sand Dunes will still be going strong. Like Pismo, the beach is still cool. There are some in Utah, Idaho, & Oregon that don't get so hot temp wise too.

As for me, I'll be head'n to the "moon rover training grounds" of Cinders Offroad Vehicle area.

Red Rider & I usually go to Dumont (which is practically in Death Valley) in the middle of July for a couple of days. Summer is the best time to hit the dunes. No crowds & fast virgin sand. It is HOT, but you can hang out, eat, sleep & drink inside the air conditioned trailer during the day and ride in the early morning, evening and nightime hours. Two months and counting and I can't wait!

Rex Karz

Dumont-My favorite place to ride. Flat out. Sometimes the sand is hard to read at certain hours of the day because it is so smooth. Anyone ever try to night ride that place? That sounds hairy, not like Pismo. Pismo dunes don't have razorbacks, so You can go WFO there at night. The great thing about that is trying to go to sleep after a night ride, you close your eyes and it's like you're on a sand roller coaster all over again.

These razorbacks that your talking about? Is that the blind side of the dune that drops striaght off? what creates this phenomenon? Wind perhaps.

lol that little shed looks tiny. So how long do does it take a razor back to form like could you ride a huge hill one day come back next week and the wind turned it into a razorback or vise versa? I bet people get hurt all the time flying up some hill and not checking whats on the other side first.

Fortunately, things don't change drastically, that quickly. I've been riding there for over 25 years and the dunes are pretty much the same now as they were back then. What changes are the shadows as the sun moves across the sky. Sometimes you'll hit a knife edge or razorback because you don't even see it. They tend to blend in and look like one smooth dune, and then all of a sudden it's, OH S..T, hang on!

People do get hurt all the time and a few are killed every year, but it's usually from a collision with another vehicle, or from mixing alcohol and gasoline, not from riding off a razorback. As with any type of riding you must use good judgement and not get in over your head. :beer

A 250 is a more desiarable dune bike. The probelm with 2-stroke bikes in the sand is they get less traction thus making the motor constatly turn higher RPM'S there for dirt bike motors die quicker on the dunes. I would not reccomend takin your 80 out there.

It all depends on how good of a rider he is. If hes good enough he can get around he will have fun. One thing with the bike, you let off the gas and its like hitting the brake, you stop fast. It takse some gitting used to but its defently worth it. The 450 would defently be the most desiered dune bike.
