Like the title says I just purchased a 85 200x off of ebay. And I would like to upgrade it to make it look like the 86-87 model 200x's. Dont much like the droopy fender look. Like the more tri z looking fenders like the later models have. Other then the white front fenders the tank and the rear white fenders. What other external differences are there in these 2 models? Also I do know that the compression is slightly higher and that there are some square tube 86-87 frames and a 6 speed tranny. But beasides all that what other external differences are there?

83-85 was the first generation of 200X's. 86-87 was the second and sadly the last generation of 200X's. The 2 machines are completely different from one another. you can bolt on an 86-7 front dender to the 85"s triple clamps. As for the rear fenders I have no idea if they fit or not, another good visual upgrade is to get some maier super scoops. they replace the short factory ones as the super scoops are bigger and they flare out more.

It just looks like an 84 cause of the black seat. 84 also had red and orange wing stickers . I think 84's & down had round tubing swingeranms too. Either way old dealer dude you got a good deal.

I think you should go with the superscoops and the 86 front fender too. I think the 86 headlight if you could find one and it fits (not sure) would look cool as well. Maybe some 20" tires on the back.

Get the white 250r front fender from maier. Then get the white rear 200x fender for the year. The 250r (85-86 by the way) is a direct bolt. The 86-87 200x is not. The compression is the same on the 2 machines in stock form. The Jetting is as well for the most part. Both use 24mm carbs. The topend is completely different as far as valves and cams are setup. There is decompresion on the 86-87 none on the earlier year ones. The lower end difference is the 6th gear. Yours can have them to. Simple swap out of a tranny on the xr sister engine, and you have 6 speed. The valves and cam chain on this older 200x is much more fussier then the the newer ones. The airbox setup is slighlty different on both machines. And the swingarm system all the way back are totaly different. The 85-83 has no carrier for their bearings 86-87 does. So adjustments are completely different for the chain on this. Both machines are easy to work on, but in my opinion the 83-85 is less complicated. If I remember correctly the oil pumping system is different internally but you know I would have to look at that again. There are many many more differences, from the routing of the exhaust to the square framing and on. The way the seats and fenders are braced, to just about anything you can think of.

Rather then tell what is not interchangeable, I will tell you what is. The rear hubs are interchangeable. There probably is a couple of other things but you know, I just cannot think of them.....

The machine is an 85 model.
1983 had tubular swingarm
1983-84 where red/black with the orange/red honda wing
1983-84 the lower part of the fork tubes are black
Looks good man. Have fun with it

Try cranking up the preload on your rear shock 3-4 full turns to get the sag out of it, and air up your forks to spec. Oh, wait, your a "Honda dealer", guess we should be the ones firing questions. How much is your markup? Why all the recalls on the GL1800? What is the 8 flash code on the Recon and rancher ES, and how is it repaired? Can I still buy a CBR1100XX? How many different versions of the VTX1300 are currently available including color variations? List price on a 2005 CRF50F? I work at Honda, and am curious as to whether or not you do as well... ;)

My grandfather was the Honda Dealer from 1978-1996 or somewhere there abouts. He knows absolutely nothing about the Internet so I took the liberty of trying to help him out.
