I see alot of posts saying that they don't ride on the roads and such. Why is that? I know the obvous answer but here in NE Indiana, I have only once outta the 17 years that I have lived have I seen someone get pulled over, and he was riding a 400ex quite a bit above the speed limit. And that was a good 5+ years ago.
I'm always riding the roads and never once have I gotten pulled over. I've even done it without a helmet(test run). State cops have seen me do it, and I always out of habit wirl around to see if there are any flashing lights or slammed brakes. Nope. They just keep right on going. Of course I live in the country, if that has anything to do with it. But there are tons of trikes and bikes and quads around here that I here buzzing by my house.
How about you?

I don't ride the roads because the two roads nearest me are a major highway (Interstate 80.. about 1/4 mile from my house), and the road right beside my house is a major'ish road as well.. route 322.. and not to mention that it ruins your tires very quickly unless they are made for the road..

Believe me.. it does. My dad bought our Big Red and it had probably 50% tread. I rode it on the one, small, unused road by our house about every time I rode (its about 1/4 mile long, and I'd go to the end and back), and after a year, the tires had gone from 50% or more tread, to bald. Literally bald. They were almost like racing slicks.

Do you live in a county that honors off road permitts? Mine doesn't but neighboring counties do. They still don't want you just riding up and down roads without a reason. I have seen some counties, that atv's went where ever thay wanted.includes small towns of less then 1.000 population. I'll admitt I rode them too, but that was 1979 and the biggest atc was the new 110, that had just came out. Of course there was usually 10 of us riding with a chase vehicle with our coolers of beer or kegger. We were prime examples why you should not drink and ride..I still carry the scars

Every weekend I go to my dad's we hit the hard roads with the SX and 230 quadsport. And it all depends on the cops too. some will be pricks and pull you over and some wont care. At my dad's there isnt even a town cop so we dont care.

Oh and if a state of emergency is declared (ex. bad flooding, bad winter, yada yada yada) then you can drive on major highways or any road for that matter,. and if they ever do pull you over at that time just say that your looking for people in trouble :D .

I don't ride the roads because I don't need the hassle of a POed police officer.
Plust it's just not necessary where I live, because there are TONS of trails, thousands and thousands of kilometres.
BTW, if they declare a state of emergency here, we can ride on the roads legally as well. However, I'm an old man and have only seen one state of emergency in my life, and that was because we got six feet of snow over two days. So that nixed any road ridin'!

I live next to a cop and across the street is a rail road bed, that is high traffic for every motorized vericle known to man. I go up and down the road vary rarely, i dont want a ticket or the bike taken a way. I know for a fact that 75% of the atvs, dirtbikes, and go-karts go buy have no registration, they dont get tickets because there family is on the town council or have lots of money. Its bs how things work around here.

I've ridden roads very little(twice when I knew it was illegal and once when it was questionable) One was just down our little dead end road to get to a neighborhood track and one when we were lost for 3 hours in summer gear in the rain and snow. The other was just being tired and riding down the side of a state forest road where there was a trail worn in.

I ride 99% dirt roads. The only time I touch hard road is when I cross them. But if you want to get technical, a dirt road is legaly the same as a hard road. It's still a road, I just figure it's less used.

I ride the roads all the time. When the fields are picked, then we will take shortcuts, but I live in the country and rarely see the cops. Most of the time a bunch of us just get together and ride the roads to the trails or fields. When encountered by the cops........ they cant accelerate as fast as the 250R :p

Heres the scoop for you youngins.

This all started back in the middle 1980s with some hard core riders and racers out riding responsibly and doing PR for ATV's which was needed because they were (and still are) getting bad press. Junior is 6 years old with no training or helmet, gets killed and somehow its the ATVs fault.

Then there were the SPORES (spastic people on racing equipment) doing dumb stuff like trespassing, RIDING ON THE STREETS, and drinking. Thanks to them, Geek 6 and 7 (and the rest of the racers in SW Ohio) lost thousands of acres of riding land.

Riding ATVs or any vehicle with a solid rear axle is (or should be) ILLEGAL, because the engineers that designed the vehicles designed them strictly for off road, loose terrain use. They are DEATH TRAPS on the pavement.

In Ohio, operation on paved public roads is illegal, and it should be - ITS DANGEROUS!

This has become a controversy in my town, Council passed an ordinance allowing use of ATVs and snowmobiles under Snow Emergency conditions, and the 3 and 4W crowds are abusing the Ordinance by riding when the weather is nice. This is the same kind of conduct that caused us to lose private riding lands is happening all over again with street riding.

Heres the kind of irresponsibility im talking about that costs all of us:

When encountered by the cops........ they cant accelerate as fast as the 250R"

Sheer stupidity.

I hope you respect and value your life as much as I do.

I drive my big bear all over the hard top by my place and I haven't seen one cop while doing it, I guess I live so far out they don't really care what goes on but I have seen cops go by my house before.

The only stretch of road I ride on is the 75 yards from one driveway to the other.

I'm 26 years old, and have been riding on the road for the past 13 years or so. Sure, I ride trails, but theres nothing like taking out the wheelers on a nice road ride on a full moon with a group of people. And as far as them being deathtraps...pfft I hit turns all the time at 80 mph on the raptor like its nothing. But hey, I'm comfortable with what I do, and nothing you say will make me change it  As far as cops, the cops around here either wave, or stop and watch us ride. Although you get a few cops that will chase you once in a while from a different town, but most cops will not chase an atv down the road. The cops that watch us say that they are told not to because of the risk involved. So, Idk. :naughty:

I beg to differ in ohio you can ride an atv or dirtbike on any secondary road as long as you have you pass on the back. I do it all the time and have been pulled over alot never was charged. allways was told to keep it to the side except the time i wa doing 55 in a 45. talked my way out of it cause of no speedo

Where i live here in pa in the community i live in its leagal to ride on thier roads but not for any township roads. cops will be a$$es and pull * over if * drive on them. We still ride on them to get from road to road. i know that handling is majorly diffrent on assfalt so i try not to turn when i ride on them. But then there are the idiots who f- things up and try to pass people with passangers and end up killing them selfs. there is always ways people will find a away to screw *

I love The Upper Penn. in Michigan, there "riding the road rules" apply county by county and I'd say about 80-85% of them except road riders and even provide ATV road maps of the area. We are like ATC crazy, we only ride about 100 yards to the next driveway. There is enough land to ride here, gotta love the country!!!!
As for a helmet...We allways wear one. Need to test run it? If it's on the road, then I say "Allways wear one" !!
