KTM is an Austrian bike. All KTM's up until about 1995 had the kicker on the left side. Its not a big deal. You just kick standing next to the bike.

The trouble is the massive compression. I am driving to Waco in the morning to have the head modified a bit. This should ease starting and give it more power....we will see!!

wow, that thing would probably take some balls to ride, i rode my buddy's modded yz250 mx bike and it made a sissy out of me. i bet with that thing you just sit on the tank grab a fist full of throttle and hold on

Yeah...it will make a YZ 250 feel like a KX 80....

Actually its only 300 more cc's.....so more like a 50cc bike...ha ha!!

Yeah thanks. That bit of the project came out really neat. They look so good and they are very durable.

I tell ya...the tenacity I learned working on trikes...sure has paid off with this KTM.

Kintore,

Its a beast for sure. Its also very broad and has a ton of torque. I rode it ones and its a bike you have to take seriously. You use the throttle like a surgeon...no out of control whacks.

I just had the head modifed and now I am sure it will really run faster and more brutal. I'll post some info on it when I get it all back toghether and running.

Waiting on the chrome shop for my pipe!:Bounce :Bounce

You are an astute man!!

Yes a 550 KTM is 548 cc of two stroke power. Top HP is made just around 6500 rpm. Its the same bike as mine in the pics, but with the body plastics are different.

Here are some pictures from the different years. Last year of production 1996.

Everyone that rides a 550 and then goes back to the CR or KX 500 will comment on how much faster and powerful the 550 is. These bikes are the most powerful production open classers. (With the exception of the ATK 700 and 620).

I really like the 3rd one down. I remember seeing that in one of my mags from 1994. I used to prescribe to dirtbike. It was a real good mag. Expecially the buyers guide addition. I think I still got some issues around from when I was 5. 1993- 1994. I also remember seeing the ATK in there. It was huge and really expensive. Nice bikes though.

I have been trying to figure out what month in 1994, 1995 and 1996 they tested the KTM 550's. Do you have any idea?

If you ever get the time, could you check and see what issues the bike was tested in?

Also any Open Class shootouts would be cool as well if the KTM 500 or 550 is in it.

I have a chance to buy a bunch of Dirt Bike mags...but want the ones with the 550 in it.

I would be so grateful for any information!!

I have ridden my 550 and jetting her just about right.

let me tell you 3rd gear and half throttle is all I can stand. This is right when the powerband puts out a massive hit. She has good low end and low to mid...but right at half throttle she pulls you off the seat.

3rd gear..thats it.

Its insane! Makes my zilla feel like a 250. Makes an ATC 250r....well feel like a 80...I mean it.

Incredible....66 hp....just crazy....incredible motor.

No you don't grab the throttle. You ROLLLLLL the throttle on gently. It would literally flip you over. I was slightly heavy handed in 4th and she almost looped over. No clutch dumping....just a bit quick opening the throttle and that almost happened...

just amazing. More power than a CR500 and KX 500. The only motor that is close is the 85 CR500 engine.

Yea i leaned to roll on the throttle the Hard way...You DONT ride these things like 125's you rarely touch the clutch (least on mine) opposed to anything else Put the hammer down and work it in the corners...you did that with this bike it would Loop No second thoughts.......lol
