I have a 2001 raptor 660. for the past few weeks, at times when I go to start it up thye starter doesn't soun das if it is catching the gears. I just have to keep trying until it finally catches. Any suggestions on this problem? I haven't had time to really check it out yet.

Your starter clutch has gone out. That is a typical problem with Raptors. I can't remember who makes them, but there is an aftermarket company that makes better replacements than Yamaha. Another thing to watch for on the 2001 (and early 2002) models is for second gear to let go. Yamaha updated the tranny in 2002 because of a lot of warranty claims, but some early 02s got out with the weak gearset. I have first-hand experience with replacing them in an 02.

Friend of mine had this happen to his raptor also. I'll see if I can get a hold of him today and find out where he bought the parts. I know he bought the aftermarket parts to fix his. Cost him about $250 I think. I know he went in and tried to fix it himself first, it worked for awhile but the same thing happened again.

It could be your oneway bearing, that is a common problem with all raptors..haha, glad I got rid of mine before this happened..

Thanks Guys. I am looking for the cheapest way out. The main reason I even bought my raptor was the price. $1600.00

The tranny thing on the 01 happens because people like to reve the engine to 9000 rpms then slam it into gear and thats what breaks stuff. As long as you take care of it it wont go on you to bad.

Thanks guys, I take care of my trike so I don't believe 2nd would be a problem . I guess at far as the starter goes I need to take it off and start looking from there. I hope its something small. Christmas has broke me!!!
