If I could get any 4 wheeler that I wanted I would eathier get a 'dale or a Gas Gas wild 300. Rode one Gas Gas and I am lovin it. If I could spring the 3 grand for the one in the paper right now I would be all over it.

I'm shopping for a new sprot quad also.
I plan on getting a 2006 450er if I can swing it easily.
My reason for choosing the R. My cousin has a 2003 YFZ. It already needs a arm bushings and stuff and he rides less then I do. My 1999 400ex was still tight. Every yfz that I have been around that has been raced has always had problems all the time. Never seems like anythign serious just little stuff all the time.

If you arent going to be racing then I'm not sure you should get any 450. Not really a comfortable trail quad, though you could make it that way. I would check into a predator or a new raptor. Great handling, reverse, comfortable ride, and lots or room for mods.

I do race some, few times per year and seem to race more every year.
I was 100% predator up till a couple months ago. A riding buddy of mine has a predator. he has lots more cash then I do. So no matter what mods I do when I get to where I can out run him he will spend more money then I have and will out run me again. With me buying a 450 it won't be a problem. He wil have to spend crap loads to make a predator that wieghs 60 more lbs out run me. I could keep up with him in trails on my 400ex so this will make him have to rdie his arse off to keep up with me for a change.
I have ridden a few 660 raptors, I don't want one. My uncle has a 700 raptor nice machine, rides nice, lots of power, not my style.

Definatley man, the 700 is 200% better than the 660 in the handling category. Have you checked into the new lt 450's? Since you do race and dont have a butt load of money to pour into after market then obviously you do want one of those 450's.

If you want to ride trails get the new Raptor 700, if you want to drag or dune or whatever go with the 450's.If you do go with the 450 get the TRX-450r with the kickstart.

My Suzuki dealer is about 20 miles further away in the opposite direction then the town I work in. They are not as nice of people as the honda, yamaha dealers. Also I have seen way to many people wanting to trade nicer newer Z400's for 400ex's. That tells me there must be reliablity issues or some kind of problems. The LT450 might be one heck of a quad when it comes out but I won't be buying a first year model.
To me my choices are YFZ, 450R, predator and I choose the 450r for the reasons above.
Cdale is a kickbutt machien to ride, I just want more dealer support then they have. I would love to test ride a gasgas 450 but my closest dealer is about 180 miles away.
Only way I will have kickstart is if I find a killer deal on a 05 450.

Vartiak, If you mainly are a trail rider, I'd go with the 400EX. That bike is unargueably the most universal bike built. That bike is a more than capable trail machine w/ electric start and reverse. With the vast amount of aftermarket out there, you could easily make it into a winning MX bike, flat track bike, etc. It's a Honda, so resale value is there. It's been out long enough that it's totally refined. Perfect all around bike!
Now myself, I would buy the 450R w/ electric start. Mainly because I enjoy racing and challenging trail rides.
Smokinwrench, I wouldn't be too confident in a new 450 whooping a predator. I've seen that go the other way more times than I care to admit. On a track it is a different story, but in a straight line or in the woods, not as likely.

from what I read in your first post,I would go with the 450er. A buddy has the YFZ and is getting ready to buy a new steering stem and brake lines and throttle cable and clutch cable and so on and so on and so on, because he is rather tall and the quad is not comfortable to ride standing with the low stock set-up. They are both great quads , but for me an easy choice. Honda Rules!!

Raptor 660 would be what I want. Tons of torque and suspension for trails and lots of motor to run with 450's just about anywhere. And its a big quad for those over 6 feet tall.

I would still stick with a dale, Gas Gas(wild 300. not the 450 4 stroke), 400ex(very versatile, good re-sale, parts o plenty) I would never buy any sport quad over 450cc. No, not even a zilla(well i would consider it just because it is a 2 stroke)I've ridden Ds 650's( hated it to death) raptors, all that big bore stuff. They are just way to big and heavy to be raced, kinda to large for trails, Pain in the arse to move around by hand if you get them stuck, and they are just huge. Only place I see big bore quads such as the DS being much use is in desert racing. Sand dunes are alright but if you want to jump don't buy one. Had the DS at silver lake sand dunes and I could have it tacked out in 3rd going up the hills and never let off and it would still get out jumped by a blaster. I did manage to make it half way down the last hill once but it didn't turn out so well. So personally I say leave anything over 450-500cc alone, unless you wan' a new boat anchor!!!

Well my buddies have 450's so I do know plenty about them. He said that he wanted a trail rider and I don't really like the new 450's for trail riding. Plus I always take a 2 stroke over a 4 stroke.

LMAO!!! Awesome Choice! Well, to be more than honest.....I would take a brand new Honda Rincon 700 over any of the new Sport Quads.
I wouldn't buy a new one. There are good deals out there for used Sport Machines, but you gotta look closely for the RIGHT one. Most of the sport quads have been abused to heII and back. There are some hardly ridden, well maintained ones as well, just a bit harder to find them.
With all that crap aside...you ARE going to buy new, so my vote would be for a Honda 450R...electric start version.....in BLACK!
Get the 2006 YFZ450. It's a no brainer.
I too was considering buying a new QUAD before I decided to restore a 200X. Out of all the reviews and tests I read, the '06 YFZ450 is vastly improved over the '05 and seemed to be a clearly better machine than the Honda. I've been a Honda guy for a long time, and I was still considering the Yamaha because it seemed that much better.
Now, I just read a test between the Raptor 700 and the YFZ450, and for rec/trail riding, the 700 was the winner. Not sure what's true, and I'm sure a lot of it is personal choice, but this is what I read.

They are comfy but if You just plan to cruise around the dunes all day or run the desert and not jump it go for it! Heavy, I believe something to the tune of 495 poundish. Get it stuck over the rear wheels in sand and you will be second thinking you decision. Oh and no reverse.

No way....the DS jumps great. Nearly 12" of travel up front...even heavy, it is still considered a good jumping machine....just can't move it around in the air as easy...Rode one or 2... I like them. Lots of mods out there too....

For 6 pounds (more) difference, I'd go with the electric. If you are that worried about the weight, fill the tires with helium! Just kidding.
My 300ex has only electric start, and I do not mind it. Don't get me wrong, it is nice to know that you have a "back up plan" so to speak, when there is a kick or pull start in addition to electric, but oh well. Has not been a probem on my bike, ever (knock on wood). Good luck and let us know what you decide.

It has nothing to do with weight for me. I'd probably still go with the kick start if it weighed more than electric. I've always been a fan of kick start and the 450's have an accelerator pump for cold starting and the hot start lever and an internal compression release so it's super easy to start in all conditions. I rode my 350X down to my neighbors the other day and he went to get his 400EX out and guess what? Dead battery, I don't want to deal with that. I want to know that even if it sits for 6 months it will fire right up.

It's not worth it. Just plan on slapping a battery in every couple years and you'll never be stranded. I got mine in 02 and it's just getting it's second battery. I used to be die hard kick start but the 400ex changed me. Nothing better then hitting a button after stalling in a bad way when your butt is beat.

I agree fully. There is really no reason to get a brand new bike when some moron somewhere has bought one. Got new wheeles and sand tires, pipe, and a K&N air filter. Rode it once and now it sits in his garage under a tarp. Cycle trader is full of "oops this bike is too fast for me" sales. Its not like a manufaturers warrenty is really that valuable. Everything breaks after the 6 months anyways. And in my opinion...get a trike.

the raptor may be faster top end wise, but the 450 is much quicker. Me and my brother raced on two '06 models of each and he won every time by 2 bike lengths. And the suspension on the 450 is much better.
