something happened to the keys on my laptop. i have to hold down the function key to be able to type anything. if i don't i get a bunch of numbers instead of letters. i will now re-type that without using my function key

s60eth5ng ha--ened t6 the 2eys 6n 0y 3a-t6-. 5 have t6 h63d d6wn the f4nct56n 2ey t6 be ab3e t6 ty-e anyth5ng. 5f 5 d6n't 5 get a b4nch 6f n40bers 5nstead 6f 3etters. 5 w533 n6w re-ty-e that w5th64t 4s5ng 0y f4nct56n 2ey.

i have scanned for viruses and found nothing. if i change users then it is ok. could my cats have walked on my laptop and changed something?

It might have something to do with the sticky keys or something like that. Your getting numbers from the numpad on your laptop... right??? That's what it looks like to me. Check out the keyboard settings in the control panel to make sure everything is OK.

Goto Control Panel>Keyboard Settings>Languages and see if your keyboard got set to some crazy foreign language or something. for some reason your typing looks like 'l337' (leet) if you know what that is.

well i didn't have settings or languages in my keyboard tab so i couldn't check them.

i have 4 users on the laptop. if i switch users everything is fine. i used spybot, mcafee virus scan, adaware, norton av, and nothing found a virus or problem.

We just got a new iBook and the same thing happened to my wife. Ends up it was the number lock. All she had to do was hit F6 and it was fixed.

OldSchoolin beat me to it. I've run into this with users at work many times. Glad you got it fixed up. BTW, Dells aren't bad, especially for the money. (since none of the money was mine for any my 6 Dells :Bounce )
