So i broke off my shift rod on my 89 mojave. I am thinking i can repair it with some custom attention. I have about 1" still sticking out of the side of the case, my plan it to grind the remaining shaft int either a square or a triangle. I then will attach a custom made shift rod, with either a square or triangle opening and weld it to the shaft. from there i will consrtuct my custom shifter rod.

My question is in reguard to the shape of the cut on the shaft or if anyone would advise such a process. I think a triangle would be stronger than a square and less prone to round off. although more will have to be cut for the triangle making it weaker near the end of the grind.

suggestions?

the 45 degree triangle is the strongest geometric shape which is why they use alot of them for supports and such in buildings, but in your case I would say a square since there wil be more corners to grab onto and it wont be as liable to round off.

Actually, the equiangular, equilateral triangle is the strongest (60 degree angles). If I were to do what you are, I would use the square end because of the greater surface area and greater material at the corners to resist failure. The shear moments on the corners of the triangle would be too great, so you would round it off quickly.

you are welding it so it will not move and cant round off. go square and check it once and again.

Tell you what I would do, I would order a new shift shaft and fix it right the first time! But seriously, if you get it to work out it might work for a while but when it breaks again it will be even harder to fix most likely.

Not familiar with this motor, but will you be able to get the side cover off after you weld the shifter on?

just thought of something last night. Think of a rachet. its square

square has more material in it than a triangle, the square would be stronger just because it has the added material in it.

I'd just buy a new part and fix it right the first time.

I'd just buy a new part and fix it right the first time.

But, the part is 100 freaking dollars, then i would also need a gasket set $100, might as well bore it and put in a new piston, port and polish the head... you see the problem there:lol:

I have to split the case to change it!! It's not a quick and easy side cover!

Also, the 4-wheeler was given to me!:beer

Yes, but would you rather ride knowing it was fixed right or have it break when you're in the middle of nowhere?
