I have an opertunity to get an 05 450 and want to know the difference between the 05 and 06 450's. I plan to race it so I don't need a shiney new 06 unless theres power differences I am unaware of.

i don't own one but i heard from people i race with that they totally redesigned the engine on the 06's. no parts will interchange. they said they are alot faster.

From what I understand the 05 has 10 1/2:1 and the 06 has 12:1 compression but the same displacement. I also read the 06 tranny has lower gearing for woods riding and better holeshots.

go to www.trx450r.org and read up on them all kinda of info over there i have a 04 and from what i was told the compression is more in the 06 it has the motor lowered in the frame and it has more of the crf motor in it and if your gonna race it be prepaired to do top ends like the crf b.c they have really short skirted pistons and some already are already having piston slap noises

I have an 05. It is geared way too high from the factory. Go 1 tooth smaller on the countershaft sprocket. The 06 may have more power but the 05 is no slouch.

http://www.bikepics.com/pics/pics/honda-trx450-05-bikepics-403194.jpgo5 is more than enough power for 90% of the human race. look to see so should be more than enough for anyone to race.

I talked to my honda/yamaha dealer today, a friend of mine is a salesman and was telling me the 06 trx450 has alot of engine noise right out of the box. He says almost every customer that buys one calls back wondering what the engine noise is. Anyone else seen this?

We talked about both 450's and he is recomending the yfz over the trx. Same price for either machine but he says the yfz just feels stronger and more comfortable to ride. If we ever get any decent weather I will probably go out and test them both out. The dealership has a mx track on site but with this snow and melting its going to be to muddy to get a decent ride in.

i've rode both bikes, the yfz,and the trx, both 05 models.between the 2 05's,i deff. prefered the honda.felt more comfortable,to me,and seemed to give more forgivness.the yfz was one fast s.o.b.,but didn't seem to respond well for me,just kinda went were it wanted, alot of bump steer.just my .02

I would be in the other 10% that want more power than I can possibly handle

I'm thinking about trading my streetbike for a 450 so I priced both out today. I can trade straight up for an 05 thats used so I may try to find a used 06 and throw in some cash or an extra R, still havn't fully decided.

One 2006 R vs. 2006 YFZ magazine article I read said:
The 450R now officially makes more overall power than the YFZ.
The R does make "a very un-Hondalike amount of engine noise".
YFZ got the nod for much better overall handling and suspension-the 450R was said to be tippy and the shock valving was wrong.

That's just what I read, folks.
I can't remember if it was Dirt Wheels or ATV Action.

I'm basically a Honda Red guy.
BUT the 2006 YFZ and Raptors have made a believer out of me!

Hi Guys
I bought a 06 honda 450r and my brother bought an 06 yfz 450 from the same dealer inorder to get a hell of a deal on both machines. Anyways, the 06 450r honda seems to have more of hit in the power band department when comparing it to the yfz. Also, when we drag race about 150 yds my 450r usually beat the yfz by about 1-2 quad length 8 times out 10 and this also happens when we switch up rides as well. If the honda has good tacky traction it will accelerate even faster and will be ahead of the yfz even more. As for handling the yfz does seem to be a bit more stable on the fast trails we ride on and suspension might have an edge. We haven't taken the bikes out to our local track yet because its to cold and its not opened up yet. The honda does feel abit more tippy than the yammie but will find out more once the track season opens up here. A guy we ride with has an 05 450r honda and I have raced him a few times and I have beat him 9 out 10 times. The one time he beat me I mis- shifted. Our drag races consist of rolling first and second gear starts as well as dead stop starts. And yes the 06 450r does make alot more motor noise then the 05 450r and the yfz. Our local dealer said that it has to do with guides on the cam chain operation. I also know another guy at our local track that has order a 06 suzuki 450 and is waiting for it to come in at the end of march 06. Can't wait to race him as well. Anyways, enough with the novel but I let you guys know how each bike does in the mx tracks and other woods racing around our area.
Later!

I do two wheels but the shop i use is a hard core trx450r shop. I saw the new trx that they were building for Dirt World. It was useing the crf450 r style head and the frame had minor mods. The 2005 pipes will not fit the 2006 because of the different angle of the exhaust. check out www.extremetecatv.com to get more info jeff builds some mean motors for these beasts... Always remember life is a contact sport!!!!!!

I'm almost tempted to wait and see how they do this year at the track. I might just do that and race the 250 another season. I want to see if the suzuki has any bugs before I buy one. Hopefully honda and yamaha will look at suzuki and build theirs wider and race ready in the next year. That fuel injection has to be a huge improvement to, that would definatly sway my decision if honda and yamaha don't follow suite.
