Well just as the title says, what is a "stroker" motor? this is one of those dumb questions that keeps bugging me.

A stroker engine is where the crankshaft has been altered to give it a longer throw. If the connecting rod moves father inside the cylinder, it increases the displacement.

well said!

The only thing I have to add is to not confuse the fact that rod length alone does not increase discplacement. The crankshaft itself has to be altered where your getting more travel both directions, up, and down as well. Changing the length of the rod simply changes the place where the piston travels, not how far it travels. This is something alot of people get confused on.

well put.

i am running a 438 stroker. it is a dart 351w block with a 6.2" rod, and a 4.10" stroke crank, with a 4.125 bore.

Yes what they said.

"The stroker motor name comes from the fact a stock engine crank has been replaced with a crank that uses a longer throw or stroke. The longer stroke means that there will be more travel for the piston and more volume in each cylinder. The crank change combined with a little boring on the cylinders and some new parts will have an awesome motor."

A great explanation is here, from the Powroll site:

It has been said that there is no substitute for Displacement. Cam changes, bigger carbs, Dual plane intakes, all produce more power, But, no where near the potential of a larger displacement. The Chevy guys have been doing this with the "Stroked 350"/383 cid for years with excellent results. The Chrysler guys went to the extreme, with a 400 Ci utility motor which came out close to 500 cid. add the Modification goodys --and that adds up to some sick horsepower. the Chrysler project was done with Junkyard pickins, they used BB chevy rods and 403 oldsmobile pistons-----And a Plain old 440 crankshaft. No serious machine work was necessary.

lets not forget that to make the 350/383 stroker that you have to change the
crank, balancer, and flywheel. because the 400 parts that you use are internaly balanced and the 350s are externaly balanced.

Just a dumb question----With the stroked 350/383---

Did anyone else have trouble finding a Starter motor for the combination?-Or is my rebuilder "STROKIN" me?-

I think you have been stroked....LOL...im pretty sure they use them same starter as before..

it totally depends on what flex plate/ flywheel the crank is setup for.. has nothing to do with what is was,,,,,,,

My rebuilder told me the block was "Cross-Drilled" at the starter mount, and there was no way to match a starter to the 400 Flexplate, so he built one with a "MIX n MATCH" drive gear. I have personally had problems switching 305 to 350 since the flywheels have different tooth pitch--but never between 350 and 400 until now.
