My dad has an 88 sierra. I believe it is a 3 quarter ton. The tranny is starting to go, The reverse is almost gone. We pulled large horse trailers with it, packed end to end with horses. The engine is still pretty good and still has some power left in it. It has 170,000 miles on it or so. )

i got a 1988 chevy cheyenne 3/4T,4x4, has 164,000,00 miles on the orig 350TBI motor, still going strong, I put a 3 speed automatic in it when the orig 4 speed auto sh!t the bed, has more pulling power now, my dad had a 1987 chevy silverado 4x4 1/2T with a 350TBI, had 246,000,00 miles on it when he sold it, orig motor, never tuched the block/had, did have to replace hte tranny twice though.

I put 230,000 miles on a 92 Silverado. Still runs good. Just got an 03 Silverado so the 92 is on light duty, but still a good rig. Motor and tranny are still strong and only on 2nd clutch.

My dad owns a 94 half ton Chevy Silverado 4by. Its got like 170k+ and its had absolutly no problems except for a small faulty part. Its got a 305 (5liter) in it, which i think is kinda gutless. I would definatly recomend that you go for a 350 (5.7L). Theres a lot of them out there and in my opionion they are good trucks w/ a lot of aftermarket support. From what I have herd the tranny would be the first thing to go and on the older late 80-early 90s check the front u-joints and all the the IFS (nice feature) conponents. I would recomend trying to find one with under 200 thous. on it. :)
