Depends on what year 250r? If both are 85's,,,,.. the R would win.

Howdy should be able to hook you up with the Dirtwheels 250 shootout from 1985. I have this mag (june, i think) and the 250R won it all, well except stability that went to the new LT250R. The only thing the Tecate wins is motor being most race ready right out of the box. The Tecate was judged too powerful for everyone but experienced, pro-level riders. It was quicker and more powerful than the R, but a bit slower on top speed.

The only shootout I've read (and have) where the Tecate actually beat the 250R was in a 1984 Dirt Bike magazine shootout between the 84 R and the 84 Tecate. Basically the Tecate won because of better handling, more power, liquid cooling, and a twist throttle. The only thing they really fussed about was the Tecate's radiator location. This comparison is a rarity because it's hard to find a shootout Honda doesn't win.

It is hard to find a shootout that Honda has lost. Honda even won shootouts through the TRX250R years too.

It really depends on YOUR definition of "fastest". If you mean top speed just winding them out in stock condition, The 85 R has the edge. The 85 Tecate is more powerful and with the right rider will beat the R in real world conditions, such as the dash to the first turn in an MX race. but the R winds out more on topend. The Tecate's motor for 84/85 was just nearly straight out of the KX250, which is known for brutal topend power

Modified is a different story for both trikes. They both rip and handle excellent.

A more politcally correct statement to premote your Tecate is:
"Most powerful japanese 250cc 3 wheeler ever". :D

American made Tiger 250s with Rotax mills have them beat on stock Horse Power.
