is there a difference in the 2002 400ex motor and the 1997 xr 400 motor?

There was a test in Dirt Bike Magazine back in '99 comparing the EX to the XR. Really the only difference motor-wise was the tranny was beefed up and geared for the quad chassis, other than that, the motor totally originated from the XR from the beginning.

I have that same test. I also have alot of the issues that were from Dirtwheels and ATV action from before the 400EX came out (when it was on the cover every month for like a year) and it said that the only parts that would actually interchange was the headgasket and a few other various parts. I dont know how much truth there really is to that however.......
