What other thing does EVERYONE here have in common?

Cool Dell..what type vid card? nVidia or ATI?

Doug, how do you like the dual monitors? My son needed a new screen, so he got my 6 month old Dell 19" LCD. I couldn't decide between a pair of 20s or the big ole 24" WideScreen. Nearly the same money....As you can see, I chose the bigger single. I'm happy.

sweet man great pc you got. it should do anything you want. do you overclock?

i want a fx57 or fx60 but no cash so im stuck with my 32 bit amd athlon 2800+ with a barton core. stock it goes 1.8 but during winter i get it up to 2.680 and its cooled by artic silver5, 2 torando fans, heat tunnel, and a 100% copper tower 112 heat sink.

i have a crap v card. its a mx 440 but it overclocks pretty good.

i also have a asus mobo. mine is a asus a7v8x with 1 gig onboard ethernet. it has on of the first kt400 chip sets. witch i love their great for their age.

my harddrive is a wd 120 gig

my ram is "budget" ram. it is ddr 400 512mb stick of ballistix. cost me 40.00 off newegg.

this whole computer cost me 100.00 to build. it has served me well. it is now out of the case and mounted to a board to keep it cool.

LOL...know i don't feel like i'm the only one with old technology. I to have a AMD Sempron 2800+....Can you say sloooooow. 128meg ATI 9550 SE video card. Two sound cards. Ones a sound Max and the other is a Crative Labs 5.1 , 1 gig of ram , and two harddrives, ones a maxtor 40 gig and the second is a western Digital 80 gig. LOL...that half of my deejaying/remixing gear sitting there. the only reason why that much is there is because i do some remixing at home. most of the time i do it live.

thats why i have two sound cards in my computer, every singal channal is used for stereo outputs for my djing/remix software

LOL....my computer barely meets the need to my software. i can sit here and watch my cpu temp go up and up i think the max i'v hit is about 75 degrees celsius.

Also my computer runs my lighting system through a DMX controller which also ties into my deejaying software. I can program the lights to come on to certin songs, flash to the beat. set a timer ect ect. Pretty neat.

I'm thinking of converting over to a lap top, carrying this desk top around is becoming a big pain.

Asus SK8V motherboard

2x Seagate 120GB 7200RPM drives
1x some other drive I can't remember the brand or size of, its like a 320gb SATA drive though? Total hard disk storage is around 590GB
regular ole nVidia 6600GT AGP 128mb video card

Judgeing by what vista looks like And the fact that it runs like crap and this is the best windows has right now. I would venture to say that That will be the basis of the windows platform for 5-10 years. If you like windows great, but there are much better options. No I can not see the future but bill pitching in the towel how much better could it get.
Most servers run on lunix now. As for the ever will be welp ill put it this way you can either have 500 developers or what ever microcrap has now or the 10's of thousands of people who work on lunix apps. I mean it only makes sense right

The beta versions of Vista seemed a bit clunky, but everybody I know running a release version of Vista loves it so far. I'm not sure where you get your info that most servers run Linux, but out of the hundreds of places I've been over the years, it's been about 95% MS, 4.5% Novell, and about .5% Linux. I know of 2 places that tried to move to a Linux server environment because of all the hype, and both switched back to MS for various reasons. If Linux is such a better option, why isn't it more compatible with the millions of software packages out there? I mean, there are thousands of Linux programmers compared to the small MS camp, right? Don't get me wrong, it seems that Linux has come a long way, but there's still quite a bit of refinement to be done for them to be the "best option".

I guess this again juts comes down to me.
But then again I guess im just difffrent.

This my explain some things

my favorite laptop is my m233st its a freaking sweet old laptop that was long surpassed by technology. Bought it for $5.00. loaded xp pro on it and it worked but it took like 5 min to boot. So I got sick of that and made the plunge to linux. That is my favorite comp. runs everything and boots fast. I run all open apps on it.

Most apps are compatible with linux or you can make then work or find someone who will make them work, or write your own more than enough books to learn how to do it . Its all a matter of what you like. Guess im not ganna convert anyone here.

Hopefully you can understand that most of the "Linux" people I run into are just trying to run it because they think it's the "smart cool" thing to be different, not because it's a better OS for them, or that they are serious about learning/using. The easy way around the MS Genuine "crap" is to be legit :-) Yes that will cost money, but I can honestly say that in the end, to convert to a full blown Linux environment is FAR from cost free. I just haven't seen a real push to Linux a Linux server environment yet (nor have I heard any talk from anyone regaring interest), and like I mentioned, this isn't just a circle of friends, this is from hundreds of businesses. It would take quite a bit for me to sway from the MS community, but you never know......... I know a number of hardcore MS people that get a little tired of the MS push to total crackdown on pirated software ;)

I got a full Vista version runnin on this machine now. I actually have 3 OS on 3 separate partitions. XP Pro, XP Pro 64Bit, and Vista Enterprise. Vista looks great and seems to run fine on my Rig. The problem I have...no drivers for alot of my peripherals, not to mention ordinary programs. Now, I know somebody that UPGRADED to Vista and I guess that helps with the compatibilty issues a great deal, but I wanted a fresh install. Linux, guess it is fine for some...too much work for me. I use my PC for recreation, not work.

You have to have a dual output card, example mine

S-VIDEO output
DVI output
VGA output

vga goes to the first monitor
and the dvi (with a dvi to vga adapter) goes to my second monitor
And S-Video goes to my t.v input

i forgot to say you might very well be able to do this with yours. In your case it would be like this.

Laptop screen - Main monitor
VGA output on your laptop - Second monitor.
If your running xp you half way there, you just have to find out if your video card execpts dual monitor support
