It uses a Volkswagen 2.5 litre straight six diesel for power, not the best engine in the world, but it copes;)
Rather than explain the history I stole this from the website:

History

1971 Originally designed and built by Steyr-Daimler-Puch of Austria the first Pinzgauer rolled off production in 1971. The design concept evolved from the much smaller, but equally agile Haflinger and the first prototypes were produced in 1965.

1993 The company, Automotive Technik was founded by David Findlay and Alan Mawer as the UK agent for Steyr-Daimler-Puch. They imported the Puch Super G which they introduced to the Fire Service and the Pinzgauer which they sold into both the UK military and Fire Services.

2000 Automotive Technik Holdings Limited (ATL) took over the production rights for the Pinzgauer offering full manufacturing capability at its sites in the south of England.

2005 Automotive Technik Holdings Ltd is acquired by Stewart & Stevenson Services Inc. One of the world’s leading manufacturers of military tactical vehicle systems and a key supplier to the US Army.

March 2006 To maximise the awareness of the Pinzgauer brand Automotive Technik Ltd was re-named Pinzgauer Ltd

May 2006 Pinzgauer Ltd and Stewart & Stevenson became subsidiaries of the leading aerospace and defence group Armor Holdings Inc., manufacturer of security products for vehicle armoring and soldier protection capabilities.

Today The Pinzgauer is produced exclusively in the United Kingdom and is generally regarded as the most advanced and mobile off-road light utility vehicle in its class. More than 26,000 vehicles have been supplied to 28 Defence Forces Worldwide. Built in 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 versions, it is offered in a number of standard variants and the versatility of its platform enables the vehicle to be adapted to almost any configuration a customer might require, for example, armoured, waterproofed or a trauma unit.

In addition to the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence, Pinzgauer has an international customer base and is actively pursuing a number of programs Worldwide.

Check out the website:

http://www.pinzgauer.uk.com/default.php

My dad is proud to say that ours is the only one in the world with this specification (Right hand drive, Civilian specification, Diesel). They are now only produced for military use. He spent seven years (on and off) rebuilding it, I had better not tell him you think it looks like a VW Camper, he might cry lol lol:crazy:

The Defender in the pic came with us, I'll try and find some better pics of it.:pics:

Theres a good reason the G-Class looks simialr, Steyr designed and built the G-class for Mercedes:D
There are a fair few of the early petrol versions around, and they are popular over in the US, most have been imported directly from Switzerland!!!

The latest military specification Pinzgauer is rumoured to be £60000 + VAT, that works out to about $125000:lol:
Its a good job the military have a large budget:welcome:

haha yah, theres a few with 5 ton rears too... the truck im building now(for myself) im putting Lorain Payloader rears under it which are for backhoes and the like, they have planetary hubs and are supposed to be incredibly strong... we'll see how they stack up against the rockwells
the nice things with rockwells is you dont reaally need too much motor since theyre 6.73 gears...so even with the tractors it turns em good witha stock 350 chevy...

And i dont know about the $125,000 price tag of one of those things :wondering , id rather spen $20,000 and make a sick VW bus on 2.5 tons  , you guys payed that for the one pictured, or is that just the new retail on the ones sold to the miliatary?

Jason T
02-01-2007, 04:55 PM
Thats how much the new ones are for the military, we didn't pay anywhere near that much:D
They are built in really low volumes, I guess thats why they are expensive:wondering
Found a funny picture of refitting the engine, good job it has big doors lol :beer

Nice ride Jason. I would like to have one someday...but it would be impractical to have one over here. Parts are hard to come by and are expensive if you do find them. The portal axles dont handle big tires and HP very well either...and the axles are even harder to find.

Anyways...Here's how we do it down here:

What makes you say that? Ive seen people with 700hp motors and tractors run portals...Unimog portals are on the same level as 2.5 tons, even a little stronger, i know people who have switched from 2.5 tons to the unimog portals, but you never hear of anyone switching the other way, especially out west with the rock crawlin...and you cant beat the planetary hubs.
But you do have to pay for them, and your right about the parts bein rare, you break an axle youre gunna spend a fortune(for an axle) to get a new one

I have changed my mind on the truck im currently building, i was going to pick up some rears with planetary hubs as i was gunna make a mud truck out of it, but ive decided on throwin it on those heavy 53" michelins and keepin it on street as a driver/show truck that will rarely see mud...im gunna stick with a small truck to put on tractors, more fun.

Looks like its a pain to do that in one of those...did you guys have to rebuild that motor?Doesn't look like it is too easy to work on the motor once its in there:(

Guess there not too rare in the states, theres one on ebay right now for $13,500 BIN

Jason T

The petrol engined ones aren't that rare, the austrian army had a lot and are selling them off now. The later diesel ones are pretty rare, partly down to cost I guess:wondering

You're right, the axles aren't the strongest out there, but with the standard engine they are virtually unbreakable, and they give us good ground clearance:)

We can get parts okay, but they are stupidly expensive. During the rebuild the axles/transmission were completely stripped down to every last nut, bolt and bearing so it could all be powder coated. We checked all the bearings and gears and there was no wear at all, its covered about 60000 miles now. So luckily we didn't have to buy many parts. :D

The engine is prone to cracking the head, and thats exactly what happened to ours. We stripped and checked the engine, and fitted a brand new head. We also fitted an intercooler and upgraded the turbo/fuel system at the same time.
The engine is okay to work on, if you remove all the covers that surround it:p

We've got loads of pictures from the rebuild, I'll see if I can find any more interesting ones:pics:

Thoes portals must have been stuffed with chromoly shafts and gears...because a stock 404 (?) axle is not going to stand up to that horsepower. The stock Rockwells are much stronger and can hold up to a lot more HP, abuse, and larger tires.

everyone is okay, but the tub on the jeep is probably twisted, so it will never be perfect again unless they use a different body...they havent gotten them back to NJ but im sure there is a lot more damage to the jeep than you can se in person
