Question, is it possible to get a 400ex axle to fit my 86 250r? I'd like to keep my set up with the carrier I have, but would the axle fit at all?

From what I understand, if you have the 86+ style swingarm and carrier, the 400ex axle WILL work, but all the splines are different. You'll need 400ex wheel hubs, brake hub, and I think the sprockets are different bolt pattern too but I'm not positive.

hmmm well that seems like a little easier to come across then an axle for these trikes. I got quoted a factory OEM axle for $275 and that was the dealer fee from my friend! I've had an issue getting a factory axle used because people aren't sometimes aware they are bent and say they aren't. I may need to look into this option perhaps.
If anybody else has had some experience with htis it would be awesome to hear about.

Thanks Billy for the advise man!

the sprockets are the same...infact all 250x, 300ex, 400ex, 250r are all the same bolt pattern

So pretty much the axle is a direct swap except the brake and hubs?

The brake hub spline is also the same. It Is very popular for people to swap the 250r brake hub, brake stay & calipar onto a 400ex to gain ground clearance and better brake pads. I have a 400ex axle In my 89 TRX250r with the 250r brake hub & 250r calipar. The wheel hub splines are smaller on the EX. The only problem I have ever ran Into with 400ex parts on a 250r Is the distance from the carrier to the peg that holds the brake stay from spinning. It Is farther forward on the 400ex. I lengthened the groove for the stay when I put a extended 400ex swinger on my 310 drag ride.

So Jason, If I were to just use the 400ex axel itself with my 250r brake system would it just go right in? I'm not going to use a 400ex swinger, just the axle itself.

there are THOUSANDS of 250r axles out there. anything from 86-89 will work. why go through that hassel?

Its hard to come across one that isn't bent and for a good price. I bought one that the guy said was an 86 but it was an 85, *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**E dited* people lol I got one off another guy that was a little bent when he said it wasn't. They are just so old that time has taken it's tole on them so it's easier to find one damaged then not. I thought I'd try this route, especially if it slaps right in, hubs I can change not an issue at all.

and 400ex's have been around for 14 years. what you are saying make NO sense.

Ok.... when was the last year 400ex you seen riding around, I know I recently raced a 2004 model. Man what a time difference compared to 250r's that were around from 86-89.. Smart ass remarks really aren't needed bro ;)

its not a smart ass remark. whats the difference if you buy a 14 year old quad axle over a used but nice lsr 250r axle? no matter what if you buy used you are taking a chance.

Yea I know it is a chance, I just thought maybe I could widen my options a bit with a 400ex axle. I'm still searching around for one though, just a bit pricey

I have one that is straight, but the finish has the typical 21 yr old look to it.
If your interested I could email you a picture.

Yes the axle from a 400ex will fit right In with no problem except the hubs are different.

I,m going to deviate slightly on this post but will a TRX 450R axle and/or bearing carrier work in an 86 atc 250R because I see quite a few on UK ebay for sale for a few beans ,,and I see not a lot of 250R axles/bearing carriers over here ,, so the 450R,s would be tip top if they fit ,, Has any one got info on this????
Cheers

I was also wondering if the 450r axel fit on hte 400ex rear end. the 450r axel is an inch wider!

I can tell you a little about the 450r & 250r carriers & axles, as I have a 450r torn to shreads In my barn.

The 450r sprocket hub Is offset way towards the axle carrier. The carrier Is also narrower In total width. This means the the 450r carrier would not stick out of the swinger far enough to put the brake stay on In a 250r swinger. The outside diameter of the carrier's are the same size & the bearings are also the same Inside diameter. This means the axles are the same outside diameter. A 250r axle wont hit the adjuster side of the carrier on the 450r. The 450r axle hits the adjuster side of the 250r carrier. The brake rotor hub would have alot of spline sticking out where the jam nut & collar goes on, but could probly be made to work with a spacer behind the clip collar. The bearings might not hit the correct spot on the 250r axle on the right side of the 450r carrier also. Wow that Is a mouth full. One cool thing about the 450r carrier Is It has double bearings on the chain side. The brake stay's are the same Inside diameter also & the brake hub spline Is the same.

Im not sure what state you are in, But here in ME the EX came out in 99.

Im not seeing 14 years there. This thread is gold as I will be buying an extended axle for my R, It is easier to find extended EX axles.

I appretiated this thread also. With Jasons knowledge and helpfull post, this could qualify for World Class Help. I learned some good stuff here.

for the 350x's you can use a 250x/300ex axle but you have to use the 300ex wheel hubs. Just like above get a 300ex axle + hubs and reuse everything else.

I have a lonestar +4 300ex axle in my 86 350x so i know it works.

Jason, does the 300ex axle work in the 85 350x as well? It just uses the stock 350x bearings and no special mods? I may have to do some shopping. LOL
