View Full Version : Am I Crazy?

Nearly 34 years old and I'm considering re-joining the military. I've been chatting with a recruiter recently and have learned that with my prior service I would not have to re-basic, but take only a 4 week refresher course. I also have the option to re-classify in nearly any job I want. Currently, I am classified as 88H20 with a secondary in 88M20. For you civilians, 88H is a Cargo Specialist and 88M is a Truck Driver. The 20 part means I was a Sargent when I got out. I'm not sure if this is something I would want to keep doing or if I would rather look into something else.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

your f-n nuts dude!
LMFAO ditto....
I was 11H /11HE9 (tow gunner) for 6 years,when I was 21
...I'm now 35...it was a different story when I was single...would have went in a second ,but now...I'd rather see my kids grow up than take a round and hope my "bennefits" will take care of them while I'm takin a dirt nap.

Benefits don't mean *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* to me man. All I care about is making sure my kids are well cared for. Do you know of a better retirement plan?

Well dude all I know is I look at things a whole lot differently now than I did then. I was one gung-ho 21 year old and I'm still as patriotic as they come, but I just know that my kids would rather have a dad than a memory of one. It's your life..if its whats best for your family the by all means do it....your the one who asked if we thought you were crazy...

That's all I was asking, bp. Opinions from your perspective, not judgments on mine. I wish I was willing to explain the true details to you, but ...

My closest buds know what's up and all I need is support, not pity or permission.

Well, good luck with what ever you decide.....just a little side note. I'm in the communications industry ,right after the war I had an oppertunity to go to Iraq an make an ass-load of money rebuilding their communications infrastructure..mostly running and splicing fiber...It was a 2 year job and I would have made more in that 2 years than I would make in 6 years of my current job...I turned it down...the money was'nt worth the risk to me.

you ask if your nuts. i say yea you are. i agree with what was stated above "my kids want a dad not a memory of one". what ever you decide is up to you and your close ones not us on 3ww. i support all our troops 100%. if you want to go back in at least talk to your loved ones about it before you decide.

so you rejoin, basically your a truck driver, in iraq, Im sure they have a great big bulls eye painted on your back, you get injured, they send you back, the great health care in the VA medical system, your just a number, and your treatment sucks. Our elected leader in washinton will dump billions of dollars into other countries, but wont give 100% to our sick and injured GIs? Id really think this one through. Good luck, Jim

If I were a single guy who was not a father, I would have enlisted yesterday, but I AM a father and my prioities are God, Family, and Country, and in that order. I almost enlisted during the Gulf War but it was over before I ever could have completed basic. I was in my late 20's, not married, and no kids. I wanted to go so some 18 year old kid would not have to. Now I am a father, and as much as I would like to serve, and believe in the cause for which I would be serving, my first responsibility is with my kid. So is yours. My kid would never trade his father for a military pension, military pay, military benefits, or a military hero. Neither would yours. God bless those who are able to serve, and God comfort those who would like to, but have even greater responsibilities of being a father.

I just got out almost a year ago this month, wouldnt go back, unless they needed me. I always keep that option in the back of my mind that is the last ditch effort to pay the bills. I am now in the offshore oil bussiness and on the lowest rung on the ladder. Got good medical, good dental, and only work half of the month. If you are in good health and willing to work you can get in it to. Pay starts at around $16 and goes up from there. I always say you gotta do what you gotta do, and there aint no way around that for a real man. Only you know exaclty what you are going through and only you can say for sure what is best for you and your family. Best of luck in whatever you do.
