one thing my bro found out was that a newer yz front caliper will bolt on the rear of a 250r with some slight dremel work.

plus you can use the yz rear master cly too and it is rock solid!

here is how i made the mount for the master cly

Ok I bought a YZ400 front caliper I believe, and when I went to put it on, the disc is too large to fit between the pads? How do I fix this? I don't know if you went through this or not..

Edit... First off...what YZ caliper are you talkign about. Can you give a more specific model and years of that model which will work? Im not too up to date with quads so that would really help me... Also, what is this slight dremel work needed to get the rear caliper on? Stock 250r Mounting bracket? Is it a dual or single piston caliper?

Nouse, use c claps to completely compress the pistons and give it another shot. If not, you may have to grind a little of the brake pad away to get it to fit.

Ok you were right. I didn't even look, but the pistons were out almost the whole way. I pushed them back in and it fit fine, but now the mounting plate for the caliper is too thick to allow it to fit between the disc and swingarm mount or whatever it is called. I can't get the mounting plate off of the caliper.. how do I do it?

the Mounting plate probably has apin that slides into the caliper. Maybe heat that pin up a little bit. What is the overall condition of the caliper? Looks kind of beat/rusty? If so, its probably frozen. Just heat it up or soak that pin with PB Blaster or your Favorite penetrating oil/aersol and give it a shot. Dont be afraid to give it a good tug to get that pin/bracket out. Just be really careful when using the heat or hammers.

i used like a 02 or so yz 4 stroke front caliper...they are all the same, and i used the stock 250r mount and it bolts right up if you oval the 2 holes a bit...ill get some pics soon

oh and its a twin piston caliper

i'm the brother of swigin.

i have a 98 yzf 400 front caliper on the back of my 86 trx 250r and you have to dremil out the holes more with this one. the caliper was spaced perfect i did not have to modify the yz bracket so you must have a stuck slider. i just egged out the hole and it bolted rite on.

the 2002 yz front calipers like we used on the 350rx you do not have to do it as much. any model yz will work 125 250 2 stroke or 250 450 4 stroke they are all the same.

Its a very nice caliper.. no rust at all and it looks almost new (with the exception of a tiny bit of dirt from use that will wash right off).. the mounting plate is just a little too thick. I'll get pics later.

since you have a 85 250r that mite be the problem since they have the different mounting system from 86-89 atc/trx250r's

heres some caliper pics

as you can see you dont need to slot the mounting holes much since no hole is showing under the allen bolts

and on some you need to grind a small amount off the mount under the rubber piece thats under the word nissin

There and by the mount hole in the front. Yours seems to be flat right there, and mine is not. I guess I'll just have to grind it down.

Is Nissin Stock Calipers for what?

There reason I ask is I have Nissin calipers on the front and back of my 350x but I have no clue what they go to?

just a note, if you have an 85 r, you need an 86 r rear caliper mount to make this work.

The rear stainless line, is that for a 86 r or for the Yamaha application?
OPPPS-I see you used the whole set-up sorry, can you just use the caliper without the master by chance?

SWIGIN

well that line is whatever was on the bike probably newer r but other then the length any line will work

i dont see why you cant just use the caliper.

it;s a stainless line for a trx250r. the trx's and yz's have the same ends at the caliper. SWIGINS my brother the 350RX is mostly mine.

i have just the caliper on my 86 trx250r and it works great. you just have to egg out the holes a little like he described

since you have a 85 atc you'll have to get a 86 caliper bracket that slides over the carrier. plus weld a stud on your swingarm

the 86-89 atc/trx's dont have the linkage they have the stud sticking out of the swingarm. it keeps the caliper in place like the linkage piece on 85 250r's

DeePa
04-09-2007, 07:28 PM
do you have to weld the stud?

Mike

jason85atc250r
04-09-2007, 07:36 PM
yes you will have to weld it on. look on a site like bikebandit.com at the parts pictures and you'll see what it looks like.

DeePa
04-09-2007, 07:43 PM
well then what else do i need for this mod

the linkage off of a 86 r? Will my 85r stuff work?

DO you use the YZ mounting bracket for the caliper?

Mike

jason85atc250r
04-09-2007, 07:48 PM
you'll need the caliper accentric piece that slides over the axle housing. and weld the stud like i explained.

you'll need the yz caliper with the mounting bracket. just egg out the holes and stuff like my brother explained

i'll pm you my number if you want to ask in person

OK...

I have teh caliper and mounting bracket from teh YZ

I am buying a 86 caliper stay (the one with teh ovaled out section, unlike the 85.)

I dont get it, does that stud go on the swinger adn the egg shape goes over it? Can you get a picture of it?

Mike

Here are some pics for ya. The best I can do without taking things apart

This one shows how the bracket goes on the swingarm.
You can see that there is a pin with a nylon button on it.
This what keeps the caliper from turning, like the linkage bar on the 85's
On the bearing carrier, there is a clip that keeps the bracket in place.
I don't know whether or not the 85 carrier had the groove in it for a clip.

This one shows the caliper mounted on the bracket.
You need to egg the holes out on the 250R mounting bracket just a little.
The holes on the YZ bracket are just a hair off.
Hopefully these help.

man, im so confuzed! jason what where we discussing?

i was saying you can by this yz caliper and do the swap. saves you some money since you only have to buy the caliper instaed of all the 450r stuff. the yz caliper is dual piston.

SYKO
10-05-2007, 02:56 PM
so I can put this yz caliper in place of the 450R caliper? becouse now I will be going to a complete 450r setup (swinger, carrier, axle)

you put the yz caliper in place of your factory 250r one. just reuse all the rest. the 250r rotor is smaller which is better anyway.

just trying to save a fellow 3ww member some coin

SYKO
10-07-2007, 01:09 AM
ok what? the 250R disc will work on the 450R hub?

jason85atc250r
10-07-2007, 06:23 PM
i meant just keep all your 250r stuff and just buy a yz caliper to replace your stock 250r one. dont bother with the 450r stuff you wont need to buy any of it.

SYKO
10-07-2007, 06:32 PM
ohhh ok, man I was realy starting to get confused! didnt know what fit what and how!

jason85atc250r
10-07-2007, 06:37 PM
i know you can put the 450r swingarm and axle housing and all the 250r brake stuff will fit rite on.

alot of guys posted on atvriders.com about putting 450r brake stuff onto the trx250r axle and housing and it bolts rite up.

SYKO
10-07-2007, 08:32 PM
so the 86 250R brake stay will go on a 450R carrier? man... this shyts getting comfusing!

jason85atc250r
10-07-2007, 09:17 PM
yes it will and you can use your rotor and hub ad the yz dual piston caliper them

SYKO
10-07-2007, 09:18 PM
so I can officialy take the 450R brake stay and caliper off my want list now huh? and the disc hub will work on a 450R axle as well?

jason85atc250r
10-07-2007, 09:30 PM
yes it will. my buddy used my trx250r axle with all his 450r stuff while his lonestar was getting warretied

Just installed a 2002 yz125 front caliper on the rear of my 86 R, had to do a little filing, other than that it is a direct swap.
