Hi, does anyone know (or care) if the original Gator had 5 wheels? I'm sure I've seen one but I just can't find a photo anywhere. They all seem to be 4 or 6.
Was I dreaming or just cracking up?
I think it would be a perfect companion to my pair!

The 5 wheeled John Deere's were called AMT(All Most a Truck) is what the initials stood for.

Now I feel old. I can remember when they first came out. I checked them out at my local John Deere dealer. I believe they had twin cylinder 4 strokes with torque converters and a forward/neutral/reverse transmission. Only 1 axle was driven if I remember right.

Ive been told they were the worst things to drive/steer.

Well then, firstly 'Hi', from what must be err... umm... Old Hampshire I suppose!
I don't work on farms anymore. haven't done for a long time, but most spare time is spent with friends on their farm where the stable of strange machines is kept.
What started this was a conversation about how awkward the steering can be when making tight manoevers. This quickly moved on to the german WW2 'Kittenkrad' half track which on the surface looks like a living nightmare to drive, it probably wasn't, and could there be anything worse? Then the penny dropped that I'd seen a 5 wheel machine in JD colours and it wasn't that they wouldn't believe me, just that I wasn't sure myself! FF> to today and hence the reason for the question. I didn't realise there was a 3 wheeler as well.
Would I have one? Yes, at the drop of a hat.
Could I afford one? Depends how bad they really are.
Would I be allowed one? Probably not this side of the next ice age.
Thankyou all for your help. I now feel I may have to go a'rummaging!

I still know where a couple of them are used all the time on the farm.

My dad is a John Deere dealer, so I drove a couple when them came out. They sucked. Centrifical (sp?) clutch (snowmobile type throttle), chain drive. With those 4 huge rear tires you couldn't give any gas while turning or it just plowed the front tire. I had a 200X at the time, so it seemed very slooooooow. They only made them a year or two then went to the 6 wheel.
