I've heard from many people that in the 90's Ford was looking for a way to get some more power out of their 351W trucks and decieded since they still had castings for the 64cc GT40 heads, why not use those? But I've also heard that they did not call them "GT40 heads"........ If anybody has anything they want to add to this, PLEASE DO!!!

My question is simply this: What year(s) ford trucks ran these heads??? Anything else I should know before I was to mill, valve enlarge and run them on a 400hp+ 351?? (this engine won't rev above 6500rpm)

Thanks guys!

The GT40P heads that came on late 90's Explorers with 302's are similar to standard GT40 heads, however the sparkplug holes are angled so you will need either Explorer manifolds or special headers to run them.

The only Trucks w/ 351's that came with GT40 heads were 1st generation Lightnings.

the 1st two years of the v8 explore had the gt40 heads. after that they went to the gt40p. the P heads do require special headers. the 1st gen lightnings had the gt40 head as well as the 5.0 cobras. they are worth about $450 a set if they are in good shape. they are way to small for a 351w and only good for a mild 302. also the ford c9 and d0 heads flow about as well as the GT40 heads.

i would look into a better head if i had $750 to spend.

Are you saying the gt40 heads on the first 2 years of the explorer are too small for a 351W?

Which year explorers?

well they will fit but they are only good for about 5000 rpm. beyond that they run out of breath.
