Polaris troubles

I was out riding a friend's 02 Trail Boss. After about an hour it developed a nasty grinding type noise when cruising pretty good. The oil in the motor and the transfer type case was good and clean. I haven't taken the cover off the belt yet, that's where I was going to go next. It's like there is dirt or mud in something that spins. Any ideas?

02 Trail Boss' are Chain or Shaft? Chain I assume...

my friend has one,and the bolt that holds the clutch together wore a hole
in the case.better check it soon ,they arent cheep.
