View Full Version : Fan-cooled snowmachine in summertime?

I have a sled-related question: If I were to use my Bravo 250 engine/clutches in a go-kart, how would it handle the warmer temperatures in summertime? I understand it'd be running rich, but I mean will the fan be enough to cool it down? Will it burn up?

Isn't the bravo a free "air motor"?

my 82 bravo is.

If it is a free air i will be very tricky to keep it running right.

My Bravo is a "forced-air" motor with a fly-wheel mounted fan and air-directing shroud.

aka free air. a fan cooled would do ok but it will start to load up. they get hot quick too. they would be cool if you wanted to ride for about 15 min or so. after that is up in the air. if i were you i would look for a smaller l/c or a 4 stroke. i dont see a free air or a fan cooled engine lasting long but then again you are up north. so they may last. i say go for it. its bin done before. so it must do ok.

I think you guys have your terminology wrong. "Free-air" is what the really old machines were, with no fan or anything. The engine heads stuck out of the hood and simply caught air from riding. That's what "free-air" means. "Forced-air" is what the Bravo is, because it's got shrouds and fan.

Some fan cooled motors can handle summer operation no problem, that Rotax 503 is used in ultra light planes. Just need to jet them right. I think you should be fine, just keep an eye on it and make sure it gets a lot of fresh air.

The little bravo engines are tough, jet it down a touch and go, just make sure the air intake & exhaust isnt blocked so it can 'breath' cool air and you'll be fine.
