Why risk letting somthing fail internally and possibly damage other engine components? If it was me, I'd do a rebuild before it "blows".

Better to fix it now before whatever is about to break does, and takes some other parts with it. Put it this way, it's easier to get a new cam chain now, then it will be to get a new cam chain AND valves and possibly lifters, + labor when it jumps time and bends your valves.

I went to school with a kid who had a 70 firebird. He built a killer 455 pontiac for it. Well of course he had no use for the lame 350 that was in the car. SO, he sits in the parking lot, with the car in park, he just puts the gas to the floor, and holds it there.
I saw a connecting rod bearing that came out of the motor, instead of 1/2 round, it was almost flat. Some of the parts never were found. Jim

I suppose that because the tranny was in neutral, the engine could overspeed?
