on my chevy k10 there is some kind of rattle comin from the motor. its a 307 from a 70 chevelle. it iwll only do it in the higher rpms. when i adjust the timing it will get better/worse depends on which way i move it. what can it be.

anything at all. Loose motor mounts, loose exhaust. There could be 1 million things rattling. Cant you get the general point at where its rattling?

It does sound like detonation if you're messing with timing and it gets better/worse. Find you a timing light, and set your initial timing at 8-12 degrees, and you should be alright. Do this and let us know if it fixes it.

Until you get a light, loosen the dist holdown clamp and turn the dist body clockwise ever so slightly. This will retard the timing and should get rid of the knock. Turning it counter clockwise will cause greater pinging.
