I have been a Machinest for the past 7 1/2 years. Currently I run a Broach most of the time. I put the internal splines and key ways in gears, Hubs, ect.
I have worked in many different fields. Constuction, Assembly, welding, fabricating, mechanic, electrician, ect. There isn't much that I won't try to repair.
The thing I love the most ( Work wise ) is Fixing & riding ATV's. 3 Wheelers are about 95% of my buisness. Seeing the smile on peoples face when you take their dead machine and get it running for them.

:D actually the undertakers are more like funeral directors (the suits) Im more lower on the food chain I operate a CAT 316 turbo (wish it was 4x4) backhoe and actually dig the graves although I have quite a few years in commercial construction (building schools) Ive run just about every backhoe(rubber tire) there is my favorite is the John Deere 310 D turbo 4x4 extenda hoe sweet machine a bull dozier compared to the CAT I run now various CATS and DEERES, JCB (junk that came from britain),case, ford(really junk backhoes) I dont do construction any more cause the hours suck, when it rains you dont work for days, when the job is over it gets slow etc...etc... when it rains in the cemetery and you have a funeral youve got to work in it whats really fun is running a backhoe in the mud sliding all over the place brake steering :D :D no mean ness taken Honda ATC :D

My company handles 5,000 cases a year, I mostly do the pickups or as we call them removels and Embalmings I remove & prepair 550++ remains a year. The good points are a company van, phone, gas card. great money. The bad long hours nights on call are killer, But I been doing this for 20 years so the job is real easy. I never prepaired anybody killed on a trike but I have for a 4 wheeler it wasn't pretty.

And have recently been promoted at the plant I work at from an assembler to the welding/grinding/finishing department. It's dirty work... but the pay is excellent for around these parts.
Most nights I stand behind a buffing wheel polishing stainless steel parts. Sometimes I end up mig or tig welding (only when someone calls off or on vacation) and alot of times my shift consisted of grinding down welds with a grinder and an assortment of fun little power tools. lol
We make stainless steel ovens and grittles for restaurants and other commercial uses. Top quality stuff!

HVAC - Thats my trade guys....
We do commercial work only and I love it. Mostly retail like Old Navy, GAP, Vickies Secret, Pink, PAC SUn etc etc etc.
Want the truth from a 5 year vet? Residential is horrible - very cut throat and hacks bid you out easily. A person can buy a window AC for 200$ so it's difficult to justify 5K for a single 2.5 ton system installed. I use to do it on the side but too many people wanted cheaper equipment and half asss systems. On your knees or bending down constantly isn't good either.........
Your other option is service. Just you and the unit.... But, thats also you and the cold, snow, heat, rain, ladder, roof and you HAVE TO FIX IT!! We do some service and I take that responsibility and it can be very hard and a long long day. If your guy on the phone can't help you, your done. Good money in it, but it is not a fun job. The electrical they teach you in school is NOT what you find when you open up a rooftop and Tom, Dick na Harry have all added relays, jumped out safeties and payed no attention to color codes or identification at all.......
Just trying to help you guys out a bit :beer

And I don't reckon you have got laid off since getting into the trades have you Steve ! (?)
If I ain't mistaken that is what got you into schooling for something you wouldn't get laid off from.
If you recall, I got my job driving propane trucks when I got laid off in the 70's and went to the gas company to tell them I couldn't make my payment and they asked if I could drive truck.
Just so happened that was what I used my G.I. bill benefits for, to drive big trucks ~ perfect :) ,,, ain't never been laid off since and have never been late on a payment to them either.
john
Got that right buddie!!
You don't get layed off in the trades unless you 1) miss time, 2) your lazy or 3) the boss thinks your an incompetent fool....
Glad it's all worked out for you too. I'd just be afraid of driving that ATOM bomb you have there  I bet you don't brake for squirels (probably deer) LMMFAO........................:beer
