Thanks for the inspirational build and excelent coverage in your thread Gordon. After seeing some of your earlier posts i went and did a full 06 450R swinger, link and shock conversion on my 250R. I'm just finishing it off now but as you mentioned it is amazing how much hasn't changed in 30 years.

Your tripples that Jason has had made for you were obviously cnc machined. Does this mean there is a file somewhere and these can be duplicated for others to do the same conversion?:naughty:

Also, what is the model of the USD forks you are using?

Cheers Brett.

Brett,

Cool,,,:Bounce ,this is what i was hoping for, am glad my post has helped you in some way to ease the hassle of upgrading/converting your 85/86 to the new technology that is out there.:welcome:

Question - did you find my info/pics detailed enough?

Here is the link to the shocks i have, these were shortened to the same length as the Honda OEM shocks, as you can see in the last pic post i posted.

http://www.marzocchi.co.uk/moto/45legsx.html

As for the blue print/ template for the CNC machining - am not sure, i have'nt asked Jason this question but i have ment to, hopefully he will chime in and let us know if infact his machinist made a proper drawing :wondering .

Well, am glad i could help you.

Cheers,

G.:w00t: :w00t:

Ps, say hi to Tony for me.

Gordon,
"Question - did you find my info/pics detailed enough?"

Your pics and detail have been great, i hope you dont mind but i have saved them all in a file for future reference. probelm i had that was as your frame was moded a lot of different factors applied to me. For instance where you lowered your top shock mount, i wish mine was higher as it jacked up the back of the bike somewhat. This was solved by lenghthening the rear most link 45mm. Bike sits nice and low where i had it with the original set up.

i would be very interested in the tripples if they are available and thanks for the link on the forks.

I only really dune ride here and i have no troubles sticking it to the 450 quads on smooth sand but the 30 year old suspension technology (and one less wheel) lets them get away in bumpy corners. I'm thinking this is the answer:naughty:

I'll say hi to Tony for you. He has been keen to see the results of the 450R rear end conversion.
Cheers, Brett

Okay, i have the triples,,,,but i've decided to get the handle bar clamp placements machined, and the clamps fitted and handle bars on, before posting more pics.

I'm hoping it will just be a few more days, i'll get some pics posted before i send the triples for anodising...

i could post a couple of pics showing the bike in it's present state if anyones interested.

YES. We're all interested! Those are some very nice billet triples by the way. Should be stronger than the stock OEM unit as well (not that I've heard anyone breaking a triple tree, but who knows).

Pics please!

It cant be done, You would be better off with a 350x frame, Motor will never fit in the 250r cradle, way to many mods to make it work. O crap thats what everyone said in the begging of this build. Totaly amazing work Gordon. Hands down no exspense spared build here. This is exactly what a 2008 Honda ATC would look like.

You have the sickest machines on this site.

250rfan, great job on the build & staying focused on the outcome! How much travel are your Marzochi forks providing? Were they custom built to your specs, or an off-the-shelf replacement for a current bike?

Hi Red Rider,

if memory serves me correctly the shocks are producing 8" of travel, i cannot measure them at the moment as i'm overseas working. But i will give you exact
measurements on my return to the UK. I feel that i could get away with the bike sitting slightly higher at the front so i may lengthen the forks by another 2" i'll see how the bike perfoms on test.

The shocks are custom built, they were lowered using different springs to give me the same overall length as OEM forks. the shocks are an aftermarket RACE replacement for the CRF 450. http://www.marzocchi.co.uk/moto/45legsx.html

As you have modified your triples allready to accept USD forks, then you will have no problem in fitting these to you R the same as i have.

Some people may not be aware that the upper triple has a smaller ID than the lower triple, because the USD forks have a tappered outer housing.

The upper triple has an id of 53mm to clamp around the upper od of the fork housing.

While the lower triple has an id of 58.5mm to clamp around the widest part of the fork housing.

I started reading this thread when it started and thought "This is going to be a super build. The guy knows what he wants to do and will get it done."

I have been busy with other things and haven't checked back in a while. Do you know how difficult it was for me to see the small pic in your sig and not jump to the last page to see the finished build? I went through each page and fought the urge to click "last" and am glad I did. Thanks for the great thread. It was worth it.

I think it's great that you were able to collaborate with fellow builders across the pond to get this finished. That's what makes this community so great.

Congratulations on setting the bar for future builds (and building one nice machine).

Trust me bud, you gota have deep pockets for those triples and forks. You'll have $1000 invested easy if not more. A lot of these questions are best left to private messages, I'm sure he'd be happy to answer your questions with out the need to litter up his thread.

For some reason I never looked at this thread, but I just spent the last 2 hours (at work, no less!) reading every page.

Awesome, absolutely awesome.

I would love to see more on the builds of your other trikes. I am amazed at the detail and at the hard-to-find parts you have been able to acquire.

Congratulations, it is a beautiful machine.

Thank you Bad Karma,

At the moment am working on this bike, and an 85 250r flat tracker, and two 86 250r's,
am a bit busy at the moment, i still have the front wheel spacers to fit to this bike on my return to the UK, then i can concentrate on the front brake caliper mount.

But rest assured my trike'ing friend, i will be posting my collection as soon as i get the collection finished, due to the fact am very particular when it comes to detail and quality, things take a bit longer.

Having one mint trike takes some doing, try six,,,,,,,:wondering ,,,all 100% mechanicaly and visually.

I followed your build for a good while & was really impressed with your attention to detail, but the thread got away from me. As a matter of fact, I was looking at another thread & I saw the 450R in your sig. I thought for a second & remembered your build.I checked out the entire thread again from the start & Wow. I was blown away when I viewed the full size pics. Incredible, unreal, beautiful. Thank you for all the pics & info, 250RFan, that's one nice machine!

Man that build right there just made me wish that I had never sold my trike's! All I can say is WOW! That build has surpassed any four wheeler or trike that has ever been built! I put a picture as the background on my computer. I can't wait to finally hear that thing run. Sir you have a brain on your shoulder's and deserve alot of props for the engineering you have put together on that three wheeler. Great job! Please excuse me while I make love to my computer!

That is just jaw dropping beautiful. Great job. If I was forced to give criticism, the only thing I could come up with is that you labeled a four stroke a 450R. Maybe it should be 450RF? I guess 450X wouldn't do it justice. Never the less, this is exactly what i would expect to see if I was going to walk into a showroom and buy a brand new 2008 trike.

I'm guessing the reason he called it 450R is because the Honda 450 atv has the R at the end and the motor he used is the one off of the atv!

That's correct, the reason for the HRC is due to the engine being fitted with the Honda oem HRC power up kit, and the reason i went with the RR is because the bike is a modified 250R- So thats the first R, and because the engine is from a 2006 TRX 450eR - there's the second R.:)

Well, i took the 450 out today for the first proper test run since the build began, and am disappointed,,,,,,:( ,,,,disappointed i never took it out SOONER!!!!:D

Well i still have to fit the front brake caliper, but i just had to try the bike out, and am very very pleased with the end result:Bounce :Bounce .

I had the front forks modified originally as i thought the forks in there original state would be to firm for the 3 wheeler, but after i instaled the wheel spacers i realised the forks were to short and the donner springs were to soft & short.

So the front shocks have been restored to there original factory spec (265mm travel):D , i had to mount the ignition system and a few other little bits n pieces, but thats it running now - and running well. :D

When i bought this trx 450 i never rode it ,as it arrived in a crate from the states sort of partially dissmantled, so i never rode the engine as a quad, i found out today the bike only has 5 gears,WTF, am ripping up the trails and wondering WTF, i think the bike needs another gear but thats just me.

So as far as the ride report, the bike rides really smooth, the front suspension is fantastic:Bounce , the factory works Marzocchi shocks just soak up the bumps and ruts, the rear suspension feels really smooth although the rear tires am using are hard and heavy, you can feel the hardness of the ride coming from the tires and not the rear shock. I have the original 450 rear tires and lots of others like turf tamers, holeshots ect, so i'll experiment a little and see what rear tires i like best.

Like any of you know that have a trx 450, the bike pulls hard from low revs up.

I have'nt tried it on grass/mud yet only on hard packed gravel forest trails, so traction could have been better, but the bike handles great, it's by no means a wheelie machine - unless you want it to be:D, possibly due to the extended swinger. But considering i built this bike practically single handed, i am really happy with the end result.

I'll post some action shots soon.

Thanks, again to the 3WW members who assisted me with this project.

No, the triples were kindly made by Jason hall here on the board, myself, Jason and the machinist - a friend of Jasons collaborated in the fabrication.

I told Jason what i wanted, we talked, came up with the best offset while still sticking to OEM angle, then worked with the machinist to achieve the end goal.

The triples are one of the best pieces on the bike IMHO,,,,:D

Glad you like them Hoosier.

Sorry scooterroo, have'nt looked at the site this afternoon.

Okay i did modifiy the forks originally, but after fitting i realised they were to short and soft, so i had them put back to original factory spec(so the forks have not been modified).:D

The front brake caliper mounting bracket has just been modified, and the engineer is presently working on the new mounting points for the front fork guards.

The engineer has also modified the fuel spiggot on the carb, so i only have the front light to wire up and that should be the bike totally finished.:Bounce :Bounce :D

Thanks for your kind comments.

250rfan, the front brake setup came out very nice. How about a close up photo so we can see the details? Also, do your fork guards have enough room to slide behind your front fender? I know on my inverted fork conversion, I needed to move the front fender forward a bit so they would clear, should I happen to bottom them out. I just don't want to see you waste your fender or fork guards. ;)

Hey Red Rider,,, gee,,,,,,,thanks for the heads up, i never thought of that:rolleyes: , i'll do some measuring tonight. Do you know how much distance is left when the forks are fully compressed from the bottom of the fork leg to the end of the slider?.

As for the close up's, ye no problem, i was actually going to pm you and show you how it was done, but i forgot to take step by step pics when we first began the alteration so i'll need to disassemble the complete assembly (which is in 3 parts), which is no problem, but this is really the first time i have used the bike with all brakes operational & the bike complete so i want to take it out a few more times and just enjoy it before i start taking bits of again.

I'm going to change the front caliper to an 85 black one, so i'll take the pics then and update you.

cheers,

...so i'll need to disassemble the complete assembly (which is in 3 parts), which is no problem,I would imagine the measurements would be different since we're both using different forks. I never thought of the clearance issues myself, until I had the springs out & the forks collapsed, so I could put in the heavier springs.

No need to disassemble your bike to take pics of the front brake setup. I just wanted a closer-up pic to see how beautiful it came out. We've all grown accustomed to your attention to detail, and the front brake setup is typical 250rfan work. :w00t: Me likey!

Here ye go RR,

The mounting assembly comes in 3 parts, and bolts onto the fork tube lower housing utilising the existing guard mounts and the front axel.
The mounting bracket is fabricated from aluminium and was hand machined and polished by my engineer friend. Like the rest of the parts he makes for me the workmanship is top notch. He also machined & fitted new mountings for the guards.

Hey Jason,

Firstly, well done on your win at Smith road :w00t: :w00t: ,

Okay, no i never had to remove the lower housing, the caliper bracket bolts straight on utilising the front axel and the original fork gaurd mounting points. So no welding required.

As for the new fork gaurd mounts, small bushes were made, bonded onto the fork then drilled and tapped after painting you would never tell they are not factory:w00t:

Jason, your prediction on the tank welding was correct, the tank sprung a small leak so rather than p1ss about with plastic welding, am getting a new replica tank made, this will eliminate any future tank problems.

Cheers,

G.

Well Saleen,

As it happens i have'nt used the 450 for a few months now,,,,:(

The fuel tank developed a leak after the last outing pictured here.........

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u275/250rfan/AlfordVintagerally2008020.jpg

The plastic welding did'nt hold up as predicted by Jason Hall, but i had to give it a go and see if i could make it work, part of the problem with plastic welding a fuel tank is that you cannot get inside to do a sealing weld.

Also plastic welding unlike normal metal welding does'nt really penetrate the plastic, more like glues it together really.

I scoured the internet trying to find some sort of product that could seal the leak from the inside like you get for the metal tanks, but all products seemed to only cater for the metal fuel tank.

So..........a quick phone call over the pond and a solutions was found,,,,,,,:)

Jason Hall has came to the rescue again with this OEM replica tank made of Aluminium...............:naughty:

Sweeet............

As you can see Jason has almost completed the tank, but due to family obligations and other projects it's taken a bit longer than first estimated,,,,by it will be worth the wait.

Thanks,

awesome build...a great read too. Makes me want to build a true custom rather than a hopped up, mostly stock machine. This site and it's members truely are the best, if it's trike related, no need to check anywhere else. well done....

Followed this build in the process but didnt comment? Maybe because I was too busy drooling! Awesome trike Gordon! Never saw the aluminum tank till now, but Jason did a killer job on it. You two are craftsmen for sure!

Read through the thread again today, it is such a beautiful bike. I like it so much better than the rest of the 450 trikes. It is because of the 250r being the starting point rather than going the 450 quad/dirtbike route.

I was never a fan of painting plastic, but it has worked so well. It gives the bike a great OEM look rather than the "im covered in maier poo" look.

The forks, triple clamps, front brakes..... Are Phenomenal.

Even after years, this trike is it. Top notch job you've done.

Not sure anyone is still watching this thread, but would using the motorcycle top end and carb (or just plain use the whole 450x engine) have allowed the tank and frame to not need to be cut?

Wow, been a while since I posted on this thread and to think it's been 7 1/2 years since the thread started - where does the time go?

Well, there's been a few revisions to the bike since the original build so I thought I would take some time out to update the thread for anyone who may be interested.

On the last run out ( end of last year ) on the beach the bike overheated and blew the water hose so on investigation I think the problem was more to do with the rear tyres ( fast trackers) than an engine issue. So I will run the OEM 450 rears on the beach from now on.
While looking into the issue I decided to make some improvements to the water system to hopefully assist in the cooling of the bike. Those in the know will be aware of the fact the engine is from a 2006 TRX 450eR so the engine came from a quad which had a radiator fan installed as standard. Putting the engine into the 250R chassis means I lose the original radiator and radiator fan.

Therefore I decide I would make a 3 stage improvement, mainly to reduce water temp from radiated heat from the exhaust effecting the water hose.

Step 1 - Design Engineering Titanium Exhaust Wrap

Step 2 - Design Engineering Versa Shield

Step 3 - Radiator fan with Digital Temp sensor - http://www.trailtech.net/electrical/digital-fankit

On initial testing (tick over) the fan is working perfectly keeping the temp at -+ 190 DegF , I will see how things transpire.

Another couple of changes were to the upper top tube, in order to get the OEM carb to fit I removed part of the top tube which can be seen in the first pages of the thread.

On re examing this issue I decided to cut the top of the OEM carb, this made it possible to get it almost under the top tube, but not quite. So I cut of the intake manifold machined an angle to it then welded it back on in situ (couldn't be bothered removing the engine), this put the intake at a more downward angle which helped to put the carb at an angle which made it fit under the top tube.
So, now the carb would fit I returned the top tube back to normal.
