View Full Version : RD/Tri-Z 400?

I have a Yamaha RD 400 that I'm thinking of turning into a trike or using the engine for one of the Z's I have to put together. Any one try this before? The RD is a 400cc twin cylinder, air cooled two-stroke. I have the 400 all apart now waiting to rebuild the crank, after that I'll put the engine together and see how close it comes to fitting in a Z frame.

Here's a pic of a conversion done by a guy I knew. Its an RD400 in a Tri-Z

There was just someone selling a frame for the rd350 set up as a trike. Alot of companies at one time made frames for the r5\rd350\rd400. You can still find some neat parts too. DG gold heads, DG pipes, pvl ignitions, hi comp pistons, oil pump block offs, dip stick coolers and even conversion cool heads(which are rare but sometimes pop up for sale). I have a suspension frame made for the rd350. They were quite the terror at the dunes at one time. And the rd350\400 is the grandfather of the water cooled 350 stroke quad engine. You can run carb spacers, rz350 intakes and a boost bottle for a nice increase in power across the powerband too. I don't know how well they fit in a tri-z, but they definitely make for a fun trike. Good luck with your conversion.

Lets not forget that the RD/RZ350 and 400 are VERY similar to the Banshee engine, it's basically the same thing! And because I've seen Banshee engines in Tri-Z's, I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to shoehorn an RD400 in there as well!
