need input on .223 and 22-250

I am looking at getting one of these guns and need some input how much range can I get out of a .223 and how much with a 22-250? I like the .220 swift but I cant find one.

we have the .22-250 in a remington target rifle with a 32x scope on it. range wise, it'll go. we have it sited in at 200 and it shoots pretty much flat out to 300 or so, then you'll start seeing drop. but we have shot out to 750 with it.

have the .223 in the ruger mini-14 it's a fun little gun. 20 round clip and it'll rip em off as fast as you can pull it. also a flat shooter though it isn't really in the same league with the .22-250

.223 are cheaper than 22-250 to shoot last i looked. I have a .223 i like it, i don't have a good scope on it yet. Both will reach out there. From what i've read and seen those 2 are the choice for coyote hunters, unless you run with dogs and then it's shotgun.

I would have to agree with the majority and say that the 22-250 is the better of the two once 300 meters is reached. I spent 12 years in the military and became very comfortable with my M-16 (.223) and my father has a Remington 22-250 that he uses for "varmiting". The .223 will start to fall off faster at range while the 22-250 has a longer reach and is much easier to control at distance. Funny fact...due to the muzzle velocity of the 22-250, the 22 caliber round will actually swell to the size of a .44 within roughly 100ft of leaving the barrel!!

:pics: just kidding...i did not know that about the swelling. knew there was a a little but DAMN!

that explains why those little killdeers explode when they stray a little too close to my target. that or the plastic insert ballistic tips. :naughty: :naughty:

LOL Goat...yeah, it's pretty wild. Just take a few shots at some 1/4" ~ 3/8" plate steel from about 300 yards and then check the size of the holes.

One of my favorite tricks for friends is a gallon milk jug filled with water at about 200 yards. I have yet to find a cap!!

yeah i use a 22-250 for doe season. its a great flatsahotign guna nd have reached out already 600+yeard swith acuracy. i am shootign groups the size of a shotglass at 300yards. its a great cartige but for sheer take down and brush hunting cant beat my 45-70

I shoot alot of coyote and fox each year. I carry both calibers in my truck. If I am going to have a long shot, I grab the 250. But my normal gun is a Bushmaster Varminter .223. Its very accurate out to 300-350. The 250 is alot flatter, but really tears the fur up. I dropped a coyote at 475 yards on the run 2 years ago. LUCKY shot!! Overall the. 223 is cheaper to shoot and a good fur gun.

here's another trick for you...1 can of starting fluid, 1 small fire, one very great distance away. fire a shot and watch the show.

that or my personal favorite, gallon of gas, light the top, stand back about 40 feet, blast it with a shotgun.

but to get back on topic, come january, i'm thinking about buying the new TAVOR rifle. if i can find one legal...hell yes. if not...sneaky sneaky. ha

thats wierd, wonder why you dont see large diameter holes when you shoot a paper target? how big of a hole should I be seeing with my 7mm STW? 1/2 inch. how bout a 30-378 weatherby, 3/4". Its called expansion, on impact!

back to the original question, all 3 are good rounds, personally I don't like the .223 and think its a round that should have never been made. ammo is cheaper for a .223. Barrel life might be shorter on a .220. Definatly cant go wrong with a 22-250.
