A welding project today

Well the ole front idler on our Cat D3 bulldozer we use mostly at the track was getting some wear on it, so it needed built up. When we cleaned the shop recently we found a few 50lb boxes of old Hobart 7014 rod, easily 25 years old. Probably a lot more actually. I'd never even heard of the stuff before, my dad didn't remember much of anything about it but I tried it out and welded really nice so I figured I'd go ahead and use it up on this roller. Took me a little bit to get my "stitch" right, but ended up with some pretty nice beads towards the end of it :D

7014's make the best looking beads as far as stick welding goes. That’s all I used to use apart from 6013's for the penetration. Wish I could still do it but the fumes give me headaches so I don’t weld much anymore. Looks good. How many sticks do you think you used?

looks like fun. here was my welding project last week. I am building the tailgate nest week. The hinge is built but i have to pick up some expanded metal.

Ya, I like that 7014 rod. I won a lot of contests at school with that rod. That is what I always used to use on new metal before we got a miller shopmaster. If I was welding something with a little rust, I used the 6013 or 6011.

If you can get that wheel spinning either on or off the machine you could mount up a right angle grinder solid and "turn" it to smooth a bit.

Unless you have one monster of a lathe!!

Be cool to be able to rotate that wheel at weld speed and lay a continuous bead around the outside, less grinding.

Actually I'm only gonna hit the outside edges of it, the wear surface is going to stay the way it is. As much as the sand and grit and stuff will be in it from the dozer tracks, it'll wear down the high places pretty quickly. Besides, the more I grind, the more surface I lose which kind of defeats the purpose :D

I am in fact using a big red lincoln box welder more then 30 years old :lol: Can't complain about it, hardly ever gets trouble. The pointer for the amperage came loose a little while ago and had to be rigged back onto it but other then that its pretty reliable, hardly ever throws the breaker even if your really sockin it down. I got a nice welders tan on my arms between the area where my gloves and the end of my short sleeve shirt is haha.
