Well time to freshen up the 450. I picked up a Honda 450R over the winter and have been trailing it for awhile now. Found out that jumping from the quad to the trike and back was very difficult. Mainly because of the radically different ergonomics.

The biggest difference between the two was the seat height. The trike was alot lower and really felt awkward. I helped it some by adding a couple inchs of foam to the stock seat but that still wasnt close enough.

We decided that the whole subframe needed to raised to get the desired seat height. So I took it back up to Halls Performance for some more modification.

We figured to keep it Yamaha, we would add a YFZ aluminum subframe and matching seat/ fender combo. There were a couple other issues that I wanted to address as well. The radiators that we originally used were just inadequate for the big 450 engine. I also wanted to use full length radiator shrouds instead of cut down versions I ran last year.

So anyhow... here's some progress pics.

Heres some pics of the radiators. These are off a newer CR450F and they are HUGE compared to the ones that were on it. The best part is that they have alot of surface area so they should cool real nice.

Heres some pics with the rear fenders mounted. Now keep in mind that all the plastics are still in rough draft phases. I also added a 7 way adjustable steering stabilizer this time around.

I will have to build a custom gas tank cover once all the plastic positions is finalized.

Watch for updates over the next couple weeks and come to TRIKEFEST to see the final thing revealed!

Funny. I actually prefer the trike. The quad just dont turn tight enough for my taste. I cant wait to get my trike back together!

I think your trike is awesome and I can't believe it didn't go to the new "3WW's Top tier custom build showcase" section :wondering   If it just needs nominated then I nominate it for that section.

agreed, I second that nomination.

Looks great Derick - I am going to go against the grain and say the "new" look is better. the shrouds will look better - I like the blue - and the YFZ plastics.

Is it now called a Tri-ZF??????

See you at S.R.

I agree on the yellow and black myself but its not my trike. I am sure Jason will do amazing work on it to make it look like it did before. Cant wait to see it at TF.

Sorry...forgot to post the finished product.

The radiators take extensive modifications to work. Also, NOTHING is stock on this bike.

Whats your final wheel base on that thing? front to back and side to side.

Jason Hall

Louis, I'm pretty sure Derrick's Z Is 55-1/2", front to rear wheel base. Not sure on the rear width, I do know he runs a wider than stock R axle.

Those radiators are from a CRF450. But we have complete custom mounts and shrouds and subframe, seat, and gas tank to fit.

this bike looks more tricked out, user-modified show bike, whereas the other design looked more like something out of a factory.
i like the new one alot, but something about having a factory-looking new trike was just sweet.

GREAT WORK MAN!

Good job...again.

I kinda agree with 300rman on the looks. I dig the throwback scheme of Yellow/Black. The green/blue is more modern race style and definitely makes it look more custom, but the yellow looked like it was built by yamaha.

Major props to you though. It's an awesome trike no matter what color it is.

I think you've made an improvment Derrick.

Liked the yellow and Black one, Love the engineering, just wasn't fond of the radiator shrouds. I think these latest mods look awsome

Now let me get this straight. In a nutshell it consists of the following bits:
Tri-Z frame (highly modified?)
450R swingarm and rear axle Assy
Custom Triples
125cc MX forks (Brand?)
YZ450F motor and radiator shrouds
CR450F radiators
YFZ450 rear subframe seat and rear fenders
Blue ATC250R front fender, and
a load of self fabricated bits.

I'm unsure about the Fuel tank or Rear shock????

Would that be about right?

How does it handle with the higher seat height, better or worse?

Derrick Adams
06-30-2008, 10:25 AM
It's running a stock Zinger tank under the custom cover. The rear shock is an 06 450R unit.

The added seat height had no adverse effects on the machine at all. In fact, it actually improved it. I found that the transition from sitting to standing is less, which actually saves energy and reduces arm pump (when racing). Also, it should be noted that this bike is built specifically for MX and that you really don't spend too much time on top the seat anyhow. When you corner your down off the seat, and the rest of the time you tend to slouch/stand.

I really wanted to make the thing LOUD for this season, as this will probably be the last one that I really focus on trike racing. For next year i'll be switching up the body/frame colors again. I'm thinking white plastics. I'm also getting serious about lightening the thing up some by shaving the frame, adding aluminum triples, aluminum oil tank, etc.

Looks KILLER!, Derrick.

I only wish i lived beside Jason and yourself, would love to go on a trail with you
guys, and with some slight modification i'm sure my bike could rip it on the MX track.

Excellent build dude.:beer

Thanks bud. Mines no where as nice as yours, but it will be someday. When I retire this bike, its getting fully refurbished, chromed, and powdered. It will find a permanant home on a stand in my living room surrounded by all the trophys it's won me.

those things can be insane loud.....
my buddy has a 450R with some headwork, etc. etc. running a custom silencer.....holy crap it sounds like shotguns when its iding.

i was ripping down the road on my KX80, and that thing is pretty loud. he came ripping by me, and i couldnt hear my bike at all, and the noise from his quad hurt my head!

This trike is sick!!!! I'm definately going to do something like this in the next few years. I'm just finishing up my 86 Tecate 500 project. And I thought mine was trick! What did you use for triples? and forks? and the headset? So many questions! What are those radiator shrouds? How can I downsize pics of my Tecate so I can make it my profile pic?
