Im looking at saving some money and buying a 4 stroke racing style quad. But im sick of chain drive and it seems shaft is a more reliable option. But the only things close to race quads that i can find with shafts would be the LTZ250 or the TRX250EX. However i want something thats atleast 300cc but preferably a 400 (LTZ400 would be perfect if it was shaft). Is there any racing quads which are shaft driven or am i just going to have to buy another chain driven machine.

How about a KFX700? Big, heavy, nice motor if allowed to breath a bit more than stock. I've seen them raced and they do pretty well if properly set-up.
That's about it for 2wheeldrive. Shaft isn't as efficient as chain and is heavier too. And you can't change the gear ratio either, despite all that, it is reliable and never needs adjusting, just a change of gear oil occasionally.
Good luck and let us know what you decide.

chain drive will never give you problems if you WD40 it once a week, and ocassionally re-adjust the slack. and replace it every.......5 years+ for normal riding? even race machines dont need that much chain attention.

wd40 dosent keep the chain lubed it just keeps it from rusting. As soon as water and dirt hit it it all comes off. You need some good chain lube, its water proof and seals the chain up.

I rekon i will end up getting a chain driven quad as 700cc is way more powerful then anything ive ridden (fastest bike ive ridden is a YZ250) i usually spray valvoline chain lube on my chain after every ride but my 200S chain has been loose for a while now and it was probably obviously going to come off at some stage (see my "200S spends night in forest" thread for full story) but ideally id probably want a shaft quad thats quick but not to quick and thats 4 stroke & that does not require regular piston changes.

If you rode a yz250 you should be fine, the kfx is automatic and heavy, its not scarily fast and you should be fine.

you are wrong
back in the day i called up RK and asked them what to use on my chain and they said to use wd-40 or something similar since you need a penitrating oil to get into the orings.
they said chain lube dosnt do a thing except stick to the out side of the chain and hold grit.
anyway i only use penitrating oil and have great chain life

A agree 100%.... I have had much better luck with wd40, especialy with the blaster sprayer. Chain lube is way too thick , gets everywhere except for where it needs to be. I have always used wd40 on my rides. The 83R, i replaced the chain and sprockets when i first got it about 7 years ago and still going strong.

well thats good to know! I hate using chain lube too, it shoots all of the motor and everywhere you dont want it to go. It always just seemed the wd 40 worked for a little while then just all wore off. I might just buy a gallon of wd and soak the chain in it from now on.

Also - when you replace a chain - you really should replace the sprockets at the same time. As the chain wears - so do the sprockets. Sometimes if you put a brand new chain on old worn out sprockets - it does not last very long at all because of this.

Dont dismiss the 'lil 250ex....It can be made into a nice little woods weapon. Theres a kid around here that has a newer one thats been worked over to 280cc and has alot of various goodies....it felt nearly as strong as a stock 400ex, stronger then a 300ex anyway. Depending on your riding, this may be the closest to a sport machine as your gonna get as far as shaft driven units go.
Other then that, the big kfx is probably the best bet.
