I am looking for a quad, prefer a 450 type, and while looking am finding raptors that seem to be at low prices, compared to 450's...any idea why.....
also how does 450 compare to a raptor...thanks

A big cushy trail bike for your tushy. They're a come-on at the stealerships. Dumb people go in and think they need the biggest sport quad on the showroom floor. Then they get them home, brag to their buddies that they ride a 700. Then later they're like WTF why are these 450 quads eating me alive and OS! Those 20 year old three wheelers are smoking the crap out of my brand new quad. I THOUGHT these 700s are supposed to be fast.
Then they ride a 450, and realize that they're WAY faster and they sell the 660 or 700 cheap to get a 450.
What's a 660-700 sized quad good for? They CAN be fast with enough work but they really shine IMO as trail bikes you can throw your girl on the back of and go cruising.

That's it...
Raptor = trail bike
450 = race bike

THe Raptor isnt a large cheap bike. The YFZ and the 700R share some of the same parts. They are both nearly equal is speed, and the stock YFZ has a edge in handling due to less weight. A 660R raptor isnt much slower than a YFZ450. But the old 660R really lacks in handling over the new raptor. These are some facts the other dont really know what they are talking about.

i got to watch a 450 yami se drag a 450 honda and a 700 rappy the other night....
now I will admit that the guy on the 450 yami got the most beautiful launch of all time, but the amount of distance he put between himself and the other two leads me to believe the yfz is faster.

This just makes me laugh. Raptor and yfz are not even in the same catagory.
If you enjoy trail riding, race a few times per year, reverse, a comfortable ride the raptor is your machine. If you are serious into mx racing then buy the yfz. With the yfz you get stiffer suspenion no reverse. Just depends on who you are what machine you will choose.
As for drag racing both can win any race. Mod for mod I would take the 700 over the yfz. As for calling the 700 a pile of junk is stupid, I don't own and don't want one mine is faster but they are far from junk.

As for them being so cheap. I am sure the raptor is the most popular sport quad being sold. You sell that many machines I'm sure the market gets flooded with used ones so the price goes down.

well if thats not a being rude, kinda sounds like a random strike quote to me :welcome:
some people think they know all!!!
the reason the 660's and 700's sell so cheap is because like said before, they are a dime a dozen and a very cheaply built quad, thats been around for a few years. the 450's are race bikes, ment to race, not put put around on like you can a raptor. to get a raptor to go as fast as a 450, your gonna need to open the wallet and put the bike on a diet cuz its plain and simply fat and over weight. like the old warrior so to say.

Raptors sell because they are a decent all around machine. They are not a full on race oriented machine as the 450's are. Think of it more along the lines of a bigbore warrior. Not everybody wants a machine that runs in the 10,000rpm range and is more of a chore on certain trails then "lesser" machines.
Why is the raptor cheaper? Its oldschool. Basic aircooled motor with some new tricks (efi), decent suspension....generally just a well put together package. When I see the raptors running around i think of my xr600...A great all around bike with plenty of potential, but just not a full on mx machine.

your right...the raptor is a watercooler. I got some pain meds from the docs earlier as a reward for destroying my shoulder again...been a bit of a goofy day. i think i was trying to make a comparison between the honda xr and the 660/700 in that its a basic motor with a few new tricks and its been around in some form or another for years....but who knows.

Have any of you actually ridden a Raptor? Or is this all what you have heard from your buddy's buddy? They are actually decent machines bone stock with tons of torque. Handling can be improved, but then again it can be improved on any quad or three wheeler. Here are some pics of mine. It's an '03 660...awesome on trails and the dunes, and decent on an MX track.

Its a decent quad, just trying to explain why they sell low. I can pic up a decent raptor 660, not beat or whooped, for $2500 all day long. That's not much more than what 400exs bring around here.
You machine looks sweet with that graphics kit!

Why the 700 for drag racing? How hard is it to get say 60hp from these things?

Not that hard at all. I have a pipe, intake and fuel controller and the package turned 51hp on his dyno and I just bolted this stuff on in less than an hour. To hit 60 you need the big 3 + a high compression piston and a stage 2 cam.

Worked at a Yamaha dealer a few years, 90% of the guys that came in to buy a Rapdaddy were guys in their early twenties that had a brand new "brotruck" a big boobed blonde girlfriend on there arm and a bullet bike at home. My point is this, that's the crowd the Raptor is aimed at and that's the crowd that spends the most money on the most toys. Yamaha has built a ton of those quads and sells a ton of them and the people that buy them are already in serious debt. That is why the resale is low, the market is flooded. As for being cheaply built, I beg to differ. I've had far more YFZ450s in for warranty and repair than Raptors. I had an 03 Raptor for over a year, so I guess I can argue on this subject. It was a great woods quad, but wasn't my taste, so I sold it. It also wasn't near as fast as my Banshee but far more reliable.

I see 700s out jump and out race 450s and banshees in the sand all the time. Could very well be the rider though. The pic is a 700 and a 450. That guy in the pic had problems over heating and a other guy that was there with a 660 had problems overheating too.

Its funny how guys think that because a machine can go 75 MPh that it is fast. When most of us guys talk about fast it includes inline speed, manuverability, braking, and suspension. My Banshee was the fastest thing I have ever been on in my 20 odd years of riding but I when I rode in the woods or track, it didn't feel near as fast as my "R" does. Back at the dragstrip the Shee went through everything it came up against on a 600 foot strip. I traded it even up for a moded "Z" and I think it was the best deal that I could have done with the Shee. On one of the other forums a guy has a signature that reads " When I get passed on the trail by a dyno I will start worring about HP". When you really think about that statement it really sums up the truth about trail riding.

I would say mainly the crowd raggin on them are those "HARD CORE" trikers.
Probably don't like the bike because it weighs more than their tiny old 250r...(yes I called it tiny, I'm pretty sure I could carry it around :D .)
also because it's a big bore 4 stroke
and lets not forget it has four wheels.
the rappy is a trail bike...they're cheap used because a lot of people had em.
they can throw down a ton of power with a few mods (and they should with that giant engine)
and realistically, if I had to get a 4 stroke performance based bike...I'd prolly have to go with the raptor. (I also hate blondes, can't fit on a crotchrocket without looking like a fool, and drive something quite far from a truck.)
I want one thing in this thread. I want someone with a 250r to come in and admit that if they put a piped 700r against their 250r that isn't ported to all hell in back...it'd be somewhat of a contest.
I've seen it said by a few sensible members on this thread...a lot of guys aren't going as nearly as fast as they think they are. shens shens shens

A raptor smoke a banshee? What the ell? I have yet to find a raptor yet that can touch the 500 but I've been against plenty of banshees that have had me look twice.
That's hard to believe. I road a really modded out raptor and don't get me wrong it had gobs of torque but it really didn't accelerate all that well. I'm not saying the bikes are crappy, I'm just saying most people least around where I live get them thinking oh I need "displacement" and then they're disappointed that they're riding a pack mule instead of a thorough bred
and back to the point of the thread, you can buy a pack mule way cheaper than you can buy a thorough bred any time of the year.
That and particularly in my case I've got this thing where they're all idiots who have never ridden a two stroke. All they see is the larger numbers stickered on the side of their bike. 700cc vs 500cc? They instantly think they got it in the bag. I guess most of people around here are idiots. I had one duffas, and he wasn't just some dumb kid either, blurt out that I was a fool and that he'd race me for pinks. This was the first time I'd ever talked to theguy about bikes, i had just met him. I told him okay, ( actually I told him I wanted a cash option and to bring some money). He backed out a week later after he had time to talk to his buddies. I guess they were smarter than him because apparently when he told them he was gonna race some crappy 500 three wheeler they set him straight that they didn't make such a thing. hehe.

I still have the trike to scream around on when its back together.
I need a trail machine, not something high strung. The Raptor will fit that role perfectly.

This doesn't totally relate (although I will stand up for my raptor), but just wanted to throw out there that a race is not necessarily a good indication of who has more HP. I raced a piped, K&N, properly jetted raptor with my 100% stock raptor. Now my friend is by no means a bad driver, but only had the quad for about a month. Results??? I launched better, hooked up, pulled through the gears, and never saw him after the line. We both topped out with stock gearing but I made it their first. Now I KNOW that pipe quad is making more power than me, but we raced regardless, and the stock 660 beat the mods, only do to the driver. But then again, Ive gotten beat by a hard core modded 400Z with an excelent driver. Overall, I like the raptor.

Dont forget you have to replace the piston every 20 hours of racing and the crank every 60 hours on the 450s.
