Hello!
I'm in the start of this project..
I'm buying thinks for this restoration from last september!
I desided to use a new engine because i was bored of repearing all the time the old one!
Last time I ride the tecate the frond sporcket left and broke the gear shaft and damage the frame...
I don't know if someone has allready done this project but I thing it's possible

alexandros

And some fotos...
The first one is how my tecate was before the restoration

that's awesome. keep us updated on all he mods you have to do to get the new motor in. did you get all new ignition as well? how about the wireing harness?

alexandros

when i purchased the motor from ebay all electronic were included so I didn't worry about it.
Once the seller didn't sell worldwide I buyed through a friend in America that send it direct to an international shipping company. I buyed november but I finally got it in my hands before one week!!!!
In the box there were no electronics! I don't know if its the seller fault or someone stole them in the process but now I can't do anything.
So now I have to find them in the ebay.
Someone told me ( from kxrider.com forum) that I can use also from a 2003-2005 engine with no problem but the part numbers don't match!

Some more pictures..
I have to make new frond and upper motor mounts!
The lower mount should normally fit to the second hole of the frame but in mine there isn't!!
I dont know why the previous owner did that.
The exhaust slips over the exhaust port unlike the older bikes which slipped into the port, so Monday I will order a new fmf pipe for a kx 250 05-07 engine.
Here I would like your advice!
Witch one to buy? the fatty or the gnarly? What do you think will be the best for the engine and for the trike?

That motor is super clean, too bad about the electrics..... Looks like it drops in pretty well, with just a few mods. Can't wait to see the outcome!!

As for the pipe, I think I'd hope to buy a pipe that takes over where the stock powerplant drops off. 2 strokes have terrible low end but those new 4 strokes seem to have a great range throughout the power. I'd read up on what the dirtbike guys like for that motor and use the same pipe on the ATC.

Nice build!!

the gnarly will give you much more tractable low end

This is a nice project. The kx motors go into the tecate with minimal mods. I like the idea of starting with a fresh 2006 engine, most of the used tecate parts out there are pretty old and tired.

i was gonna ask about the lower mount in the first set of pics, noticed there was only one hole instead of 2 like on mine. did the previous owner try stuffing something else in there like a 500 or smething maybe? looks to be a rather simple swap, the motor mounts arent that hard to fab up. a couple of spacers maybe on the swinger bolt? i think i know what i am doing with my 86 t3, seriously cool!

Good luck Alexandros

Great project and good photos. Let us know how you are going.

Will help out with answers where we can.

Best thread I've read in a while. Looks like a later model KX motor is the way to go.

this thread gave me the inspiration to drop a newer kx 250 into mine as well! looks to be a simple build, father in law is going to be fabricating the motor mounts for me, and whatever pipe work and hangers i need. gonna be sweet having an 86 t3 with newer motor in it. and the best part is the availibility of replacement parts. sweeeeeeeeeeeet!!!

I would get a stock pipe and see how it runs... its often hard to beat the price and performance of an oem pipe... If you insist on a fmf I would get the gnarly.. These newer KX's arent known for having as strong of low-end power as previous years... and with the added weight and traction of a trike it would be much easier to ride

Someone told me ( from kxrider.com forum) that I can use also from a 2003-2005 engine with no problem but the part numbers don't match!

Just because the part #'s are different does not mean they dont interchange... they make slight changes from year to year to adjust the power delivery characteristics... its hard to go wrong... it will either be more aggressive or more mellow... either way you win.. lol...

have you figured out what you are going to use to sleeve the hole for the swingarm bolt? the Tecate uses a smaller 15mm bolt.

alexandros
07-28-2008, 06:08 PM
I have already the electronics from a 2004 kx
I will go with the fmf as I can't find here one oem used pipe and new oem and fmf here they have about the same price!
I have ordered the gnarly for better low end and a turbinecore2 silencer.
My problem now is that i can't find a lighting stator for the 05-07 engine!
Electrosport has one Lighting Stator 8-Pole for Kawasaki KX250 (02-04) - 50W but when I contacted with them they told me that it wont fit!

http://www.electrosport.com/products/product-detail-1983.php

they didn't told me why but I can't figure why not to work with the 2004 electronics that I have

Maybe the stator just doesnt fit the engine cases or fit under the ignition cover... it will obviously work with the electronics...

Alex, There are comapnies here in Australia that offer aftermarket lighting kits for motocross bikes. I think that aftermarket lighting kits may be an easier way to go than trying to cross fit Kawasaki gear.

Scooteroo, Hows your conversion comming along?

cr480r, when you say older kx motors had better low down torque. What years are you refering to?

Can you give me a phone or email so I ask them if they have lighting kits for the kx 250 05-07 engine?
Or even better can you ask them for me?

FMF pipe just arrived!!!
But the gnarly comes too close to the radiator:( modification must be made once again...

nd4speed
12-12-2008, 07:58 PM
How does the stock pipe line up?

Looks like if you could heat it and bend it so the stinger is closer to the kick start shaft, then it would be better.

I would have tried an FMF Turbine core 2 universal silencer kit.

I had a couple expansion pipes that contacted a radiator hoses at the cylinder head (because they were from motorcycles not 3/4 wheelres) and I just cut another piece of radiator hose to cover and protect those areas (along with airboxes).

i use the oem forks of a kxt tecate 86 and the oem rim!
the tire is a dunlop that its out of stock now i think.

01-14-2010, 07:51 PM
Thank you all guys

As the engine was new i have to make first about 3 tanks before I can really ride it fast!

Is that correct?

I hadn't owned before a 2stroke engine brand new!!

What is the best way to break in a 2-stroke?

nd4speed
01-15-2010, 12:42 PM
The answers to break-in will be very different:

alexandros
01-15-2010, 03:44 PM
until now I have run the engine without to ride it for about 30 minutes. not straight but running it for 5 minutes and after letting it cool down.

One thing i haven't done is to re-torque the base and head bolts! Will make this tomorrow

Thanks for the info nd4speed.

alexandros
05-03-2010, 08:04 PM
i don't know the exact material that the rotors are but i know that they are inox.
I had them made for my tecate from a local brake discs factory. he makes brakes for faster bikes from the same material and they don't bend.he even gave me and a guarantee!
