I still use my trusty Marlin 882 22 mag on the local gopher population and am very happy with it. My buddies all now use 17s but have trouble with wind down range shots(200+) and its very windy year round up here(Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota) 30-40 grain bullets buck the wind better than 20-25 grainers. The heavier the round, the better they buck the wind, but you probably know that already. Still, the 17 sure makes a pretty mess under 50 yards! lol I still love the 22-250 for real carnage.

Go out and get a nice 22 lr and you will have the best of both worlds.

I personaly love the 17.

Have you ever heard of a 17 Mach Cheata?

Is that the 22lr necked down to a 17 cal? If so, I have seen the rounds in the stores but never seen one fired. I would assume it hits 22 mag speeds but less knock down at longer ranges.

I bought a ton of new brass and new RCBS reloading dies for a Rem 17 center fire in a yard sale for $10. I may be in the market for a new long rifle, anyone ever shot that cal before? One for sale?

Have you guys noticed the prices of ammo, especially rim fires? It has more than doubled in the last 7 years. Killing me. I can reload my 22-250 for around 28 cents (using my own brass)a round but it costs 26 cents a round($13 for 50 rounds) for a rimfire 22 mag. Crazy.

I dont shoot my guns enough but I never got it when people complain about the price per shot. I have an uncle that has a huge gun collection...he typically buys the guns based off of price per shot. Anytime someone buys a new deer rifle he always bitches saying "that thing cost ya $1 a shot"! So what how many rounds does the typical hunter shoot off a year? Even if its 2 cases worth between shooting it in and shells used thorughout the season thats $40. If $40 a year is too much you probably shouldnt have bought the $600 gun in the first place.

However, I susposed guys that do a lot of plinking and hog hunting have a valid point. Like I said I dont shoot my guns enough to factor $ per shot into the purchase of a gun.

I wanted a 17 a few years ago and never got one. Their popularity has gained so much even over a year or two and the price for one has went up a bit. Atleast from what I noticed. Id like to get a marlin heavy barrel, stainless, with the gray laminate.
