I Just got myself a mint condition, 1986 Evinrude 28hp special. On the motor, it has a little sticker of 100/1 mix. Im worried about blowing it up. I have been doing 50/1. What do you know about this? Thanks

I wouldn't ever go less than 50/1, and even then I would run syn. If your going to run dino, 32/1 is best IMHO. Love the Evinrudes! Mines a 1980 or so 12 hp. (aluminum fishing boat)

iv run 100:1 on countless Outboards, without problems, Even on old 2 strokes, the run richer as the wear out, i wouldn't be to concerned with it IMO,,, a 86 probably needs a good rebuild anyways...

i would run what they recommend, and having more oil CAN blow your motor too because it lessens the gas which cools the piston

OMC only tried that for a couple of years then went back to 50/1. I would only run 50/1 in that motor since it is still on old design. Back in the day an OMC rep told us to just peel those stickers off.

More than likely it's time for a power pack. It's the black box to the left of the head when you are looking at the back of the motor. There is a company called CDI that makes probably the most economical replacements. Believe it or not one of the quick tests to see if that is it is to rap it with a hammer with the engine running and it will usually pick the dead cylinder up and then drop it again. If you want the meter specs I can get you them tomorrow.

Put a new pack in and run it not thicker than 75:1.

50:1 is too rich.

Good luck

Good luck+1......Make sure you keep a paper clip w/you(I hang it off the motor handle w/ a rubber band) to keep the water pump jet hole at the rear of engine clean.(keep an eye on that steam of water!) I locked up that same motor when that hole clogged....and change the water pump too! (impeller wheel $10)..Beets

I found out, after 4 hours of tinkering, I have beautyfull spark. When I take the top plug out, she starts and runs. when I take just the bottom plug out, no running. When I have both in, no running. If I hold the choke open, with both plugs in, she runs but not well. Im trying to find a diagram online so I can look for missing pieces. Maybe someone stole from me!!! THanks all for the replys.

Check your reeds. Does it spit out the carb when it runs? What's the compression?
