well, went to pull a car into our shop today, after dad said the brakes need bled, and whatnot.

so pulled it in, and sure enough, NO BRAKES at all, and i had to choose between people, lift, or go through the wall. so i hit the lift, at about 5 MPH.
but the really irritating thing is, i put it in neutral, ripped up the Ebrake, and THAT didnt work, so next was REVERSE. NOTHING. didnt shift for whatever reason. next was PARK, but all it did was click and grind and not go into park.

so what turned into a simple job resulted in needing to buy a new bumpercover, lucky for me its a old ass escort, so it wont cost much.

but Dammit, i had about 40 feet after i realized that there was NO brakes, and i kept it together, and did everything that could be done to stop the car, in order of least harmful to the car to most, then at the last second ran it into the safest object in the room. talk about retarded ass luck.

Doesn't the car manual always say to check whether or not the brakes work before operating?

You could have probably jumped out of the car and ran around, found a rock and stuck it in front of one of the wheels in the time you tried all those attempts (brakes, e-brake, reverse, park, etc).

if you would have killed it, it would have came to a halt from 5 mph in 40'

or how about when you first got into the car and had to move it to get it into the garage. Or did the customer park it right infront of the door? That sucks but I bet now you check the brakes before pulling into the garage

I'm with Barry. Hit the switch and let it engine brake. Another option might have been to open the door and Flintstone it to a stop, but that could result in injury if it something goes wrong.

HAHAHA that reminds me of a story. The first car i bought when i was 14/ 15 was a 1973 Super Beetle convertable. It was a pile when i got it. I had the floor boards cut out to replace and rigged up a bucket with a board as a seat, just so i could move it around. Well one night i was sneeking out to meet my girlfriend. I decided to take the bug since my parents were asleep and thought i would be cool. I ever so quietly snuck out side, got in the car, lowered the roof and cranked it up. I guess i was so cocentrated on being sneaky i forgot to push in the clutch. As i was chugging forward in a Die/ start lunge after lunge, i had my feet down on the ground looking like Fred Flinstone trying to stop the damn thing. Then BAMMM!!!! Right into the front of my mom's brand new Explorer. It broke the headlight, grill and bent the bumper all to hell. The car then died. I pushed it back to were it was, put the top back up and went inside like nothing happened. The next morning i asked my mom " What did you hit with your car " to this day i have never told her the truth.

problem is i had about.....15-20 feet after i hit the first brake.
there wasnt time to jump out and run around, thats for sure.

I am no automatic transmission specialist but when the car is rolling in gear there is alot resitance. Enough to stop a car a 5mph pretty quickly.

no, when you shut the car off and its in gear, it instantly becomes neutral. not sure why. i push non-running cars around all the time. as long as it isnt in park, it pushes in any gear just as easily as neutral.
